I've always had a keen interest in history and particularly the evolution of spiritual belief systems in Europe and, just as importantly, the Picts in Scotland. I have found myself allowing these two themes to infiltrate my creative process (quite happily I may add). What follows is my own mash up of the two - keeping the earthy nature of both subjects through the plaster background - painted and scrubbed like an old worn stone - and the symbols of both which, for me, represent elements of life and nature.

I grew up in Govan, Glasgow in the 70s and 80s as did my parents and my grandparents before me. Its a 'Salt of the Earth' community - people may not have had much but, if you lived in a vertical village (or tenement), the neighbours all looked after one another. Hard Living, Hard Loving. It shaped my attitudes and the opinions which I carry to this day. But we did and we survived and we thrived. Originally I entitled this series Perfection Not Included - the reason being to prove to myself that despite never having considered myself even close to the genre of a life or portrait painter that I could still have some fun with the theme using my whimsical perspective!
