Books Art Critical Theory Music New York. Drop the cellphone. Drop it! I- I can’t believe you’re being rude to me, she spurts. I’m talking to my mother. The clerk fails to remove the tube from his mouth. YOU ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF A TRANSACTION. YOU SHOULD NOT BE ON YOUR CELL PHONE. Are you kidding me? The woman says indignantly. A few people sort of clapped. Even the clerks laughed a bit nervously. She paid and left. Bravo. Published Saturday, December 31, 2005. On a few unrelated notes. With some suggest...

Books Art Critical Theory Music New York. Published Monday, August 29, 2005. We ate well: had fantastic Eggs Benedict with avocado and roasted tomato in a small corner place, which Howard Dean walked into halfway through our meal; garlicy tomato-bread salad with basil in a park watching an outdoor jazz concert; coconut ice cream bar at the top of the New Haven bluffs; homemade strawberry pie at the potluck. Published Sunday, August 28, 2005. Word of the Day. This assumes, though, a very linear progressio...
Second Thoughts: July 2005
http://www.bcroyer.blogspot.com/2005_07_01_archive.html
Books Art Critical Theory Music New York. One thing that's great about New York is fire escapes. I sit outside in the humidity and watch what I have fortuitously calculated to be about 68% of traffic: cabs. I started a job at The Economist. Also, a bus picks me up across the street and economically drops me off ten feet from the door to the office. The heat in this town is off the charts, so the more spare one's movements (in a dress shirt, no less), the better. Published Tuesday, July 26, 2005. I got a ...

Books Art Critical Theory Music New York. A Pretentious Dialogue on Borges and Judas and a Philosophy of Fiction (Part 1 of? NOTE: If you haven’t read Jorge Luis Borges' story "The Three Versions of Judas", you can find it here. You should read it before you read this, and it's only a few pages anyway. Can you explain further what you mean about causality in reality versus literature? Much of this comes from an essay on Borges called Borges and the Plain Sense of Things. You say that a factual account of...

The World is Our Pork Chop. Travels of an Aspiring Flâneur. Sunday, October 16, 2005. Rowing on the Isis. At the end of sixth week, there is a novice competition called the "Christ Church Regatta." We are all looking forward to it, training in and out of the water a couple times a week. Early morning sessions haven't started yet, but I figure the best approach will be overwhelming enthusiasm. 5 am? Where do I sign up? The photograph is a mens team, I'm not sure what college.). The Reismann Family Headstone, Pauluse Kalmistu (Tartu, Estonia). Posted by Elin at 12:15 AM. Sunday, March 20, 2005. Today while hundreds of Lutherans throughout Estonia sat quietly in their fur coats listening to the Sunday sermon, I was wandering through Pauluse Kalmistu. Wandering is not entirely correct. A middle-aged Estonian woman who earns her daily br...

The World is Our Pork Chop. Travels of an Aspiring Flâneur. Tuesday, August 23, 2005. It took us a week to get a reservation, but who cares? The entrees were entirely French in their conception and execution. I had steamed mussels in a white wine sauce, while Blake chose the duck confit. My mussels were served with pommes frites (French fries! We both enjoyed our entrees immensely. Mussels take time to eat, as if you have to go wading for them, but that’s more than half the fun to me.

A foot in each world. Tuesday, April 25, 2006. What the 666 sign is actually about. Maybe if I had and subsequently watched tv I might known earlier but alas. It was a fun exercise anyways. Posted by Austin Diaz at 7:45 AM. Saturday, April 22, 2006. Things I struggle with. A large, black billboard stands blank except for plain white writing spread across in the center. The Signs Are All Around You. A younger gentleman in a yellow t-shirt with red writing that says There’s hope in Jesus echoes this sentim...

A foot in each world. Tuesday, May 23, 2006. And days seem like weeks. We, the congregation, were sharing the peace before partaking in the Eucharist. I approached her silently, partly of my own volition, partly from the urging of another who kindly meddles in the affairs of others. And she just grabbed me, wrapping her arms around my back and I enfolded mine about her shoulders. But in the moments when she flipped the page or rummaged for a new sheet of music her face contorted to this grimace, not ugly...

The World is Our Pork Chop. Travels of an Aspiring Flâneur. Friday, April 15, 2005. I am now an official Upper East Sider because I impulsively bought a fabulous pair of shoes at a local overpriced shoe store after having brunched on eggs benedict at Sarabeth's. I admit it is intoxicating to live the high life, if only for a couple hours each year. Posted by Elin at 1:28 PM. Thursday, April 14, 2005. New York City - 405 Miles. The World is Our Pork Chop: February 2005
http://elinraun.blogspot.com/2005_02_01_archive.html
The World is Our Pork Chop. Travels of an Aspiring Flâneur. Sunday, February 27, 2005. I wrote a story last year about having attended the Easter service at Pauluse Kirik with my mother in 2003. The story ended with my desire to one day be able to actually understand the sermons delivered in Estonian. And this past week, I could follow a good deal of the message (about donations and charity) and to be honest, it felt really good. Posted by Elin at 5:20 PM. Oxford, England, United Kingdom.
