Making ceramics starts with an idea . in this case the idea to make bowls, small bowls that stack well (not to be taken for granted with individually thrown pieces). Uniformity of size plus an attractive shape are important starting criteria. Having got that right and the pots bisque-fired, the next goal is to achieve some form of attractive surface treatment. On this occasion,. I decided on a multi-coloured fruit theme hand-painted around the outsides of the bowls. A labour. Links to this post. You'll h...

I've enjoyed working in the studio this week - doors open without freezing to death, sounds of seagulls filling the air, lawn that drowned in all the rain dug up and a touch of landscaping to look forward to . I mustn't drift off the subject! All I need now is that coffee and cake . Links to this post. Especially during the cold and wet time of year when it can take literally AGES for newly thrown pots to dry out. And dry out they must - completely. Otherwise they explode in the kiln. From Suffolk with Love. I spent a few lovely days in East Anglia earlier this month. Never realised how expansive that part of the UK is and how loooong it takes to get around - not exactly criss-crossed with motorways! The pace of life struck me as much more relaxed than in the South East where I live. I had my camera at the ready for the inevitable pictorial record of the kind of sights I enjoy. Walberswick nr Southwold, Suffolk. Can you spot them? Links to this post. The song Mad Dogs and Englishmen.

The shelves I got during my recent endurance-session at Ikea are coming in useful holding the assortment of bowls, cups, mugs, saucers, bells etc I've thrown over the last fortnight. Want to see them as proof that I'm not fibbing and have instead been lying in the sun these last few days - lol. Here they are:. They have to dry out completely now before heading for their first spell in kiln. If they go in too early, there's a risk that they explode. Don't want that! Links to this post. The garden looks li...

Nose to the grindstone. That's what it felt like the other week when I took part in an intensive throwing course. To refine my throwing skills. Learning to throw (in pottery language that’s working at the wheel) is a bit like learning to drive, teaching hand and feet to carry out separate yet coordinated movements which – with regards to pottery – combine to make a lump of clay behave itself so it can be transformed into whatever shape is intended. From the ashes . Every few months I meet up with other mad ceramicists for a day of raku-ing. Raku is a method of firing ceramics first practised in Japan. It involves heating freshly glazed pots to around 1000 degrees C. The pots are transferred from the red-hot kiln to a chamber of saw-dust which ignites because of the heat. Yet after some serious scrubbing usually in cold water and wet and windy weather (we know how to have a good time! Interesting yes, frustrating too which makes me love and hate it ...

So you've got the message! I've a soft spot for teddy bears and when a little while ago a fellow crafter was raffling one of her creations, I entered the draw and couldn't believe when I won Maisie and was delighted when Sue, her maker, came to visit to deliver her and stay for an inspiring chat that made the afternoon fly by. I was more than a little impressed! THANKS SO MUCH, SUE! Maisie will be well looked after. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). You find me on. Ceramic birds clay birds.

Watching people work can send you to sleep . bore you to death . Or it can quite simply be mesmerising. I got a dose of the latter a few days ago when I attended a Potter's Master Day where a well known potter dropped in for an eagerly awaited master-class. If - like me - you hadn't heard of Svend Bayer before, he's actually quite a celebrity in pottery circles known for boldly decorated domestic ware and VERY large garden pots. And boy was that thing HEAVY! Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).
