Tuesday, May 24, 2011. Civil War, Anyone? We have been a little obsessed with the Civil War in our home school lately. We recently drove to Eugene to watch a Civil War re-enactment. The first thing we saw was Rebel infantry drilling. Little did they know that the Union army was camped nearby! The battle re-enactment lasted 45 minutes, complete with cavalry and infantry, lots of black powder, 6 cannons and ground explosions that blew up chuncks of sod and soil into the air. Friday, January 6, 2012. Christmas vacation 2011 produced many happy memories. Ice skating, indoor soccer, scrumptious Italian cooking, camping, puzzles, talking with Elder Shumway, and lots of laughter. Christmas day brought provided incredible. For 2 years Tanner has BEGGED for a pair of footie pajamas. I am not kidding! So exactly what does a 6'2" teenager look like in footie pajamas? When laying down, he sort of resembles gumby. But watching them laugh with eachother in their new jamies was the best.

If you happen to be at an apartment complex and see a little snake that obviously needs to be rescued from a storm drain, DO NOT lift the heavy drain and attempt a rescue. It can result in a child's toe being sliced in half. Thursday, March 8, 2012. Last fall Madeline collected a large, deep purple catapillar. We put him in a jar with the usual grass and sturdy twig, and within 2 days he had turned himself into a woody-looking cocoon! He sat in our windowsill for months, then resided in the pantry cupboard during Christmas. Recently we brought the jar back out to the kitchen window. I suspected it was certainly dead, but wanted the girls to discover that for themselves. So we will be letting him stay with us for awhile!
