Bandstand Story | Beatrice Colin's Weblog
https://beatricecolin.wordpress.com/2014/07/05/bandstand-story
Beatrice Colin's Weblog. I’ve been commissioned by Glasgow Life to write and read a story inspired by the Kelvingrove Bandstand. On the 31st of July as part of the celebrations for the Commonwealth Games, I’ll be onstage with fellow writers Christopher Brookmyre, Zoe Strachan and Alan Bisset, (7.30pm and free to all – please come along) reading out the story. Anyway, enough sermonizing (is that a word? Does it have a z or an s? Follow any comments here with the RSS feed for this post. Older: The Ice Wife.

Beatrice Colin's Weblog. Next week; Spain, the Basque coast to be exact. First Bilbao, then San Sebastian and then Pamplona where there will be no running bulls – that’s in July. In 1937,…. It was as I was watching Iron and Wine in Edinburgh that something about my Spanish Civil war novel seemed to shift and make more sense. I wasn’t even thinking…. I’m teaching at Arvon this July at Moni. I’m teaching at Arvon this July at Moniak Mhor http:/ ow.ly/3V8MB. Had a brilliant time last year in Totleigh Barton.
Rain! | Beatrice Colin's Weblog

Beatrice Colin's Weblog. Thanks to all those who came to the refurbished Kelvingrove Bandstand last night to see me read along with Zoe Strachan, Alan Bissett and Christopher Brookmyre. It poured with rain, I mean, absolutely torrentially. Everyone was soaked except the writers on stage. I read a short story called. Not that they aren’t usually). It was great to be part of it. Now off to investigate Louise Welsh’s Empire Cafe. Follow any comments here with the RSS feed for this post. Create a free websit...
St Clementin | Beatrice Colin's Weblog

Beatrice Colin's Weblog. I have been invited to a couple of festivals over the years including one at Cremona in Italy, details here. Where, in a medieval courtyard, after a reading of my book, The Songwriter, a pianist played Bernstein and Irving Berlin on a grand piano. Later, I borrowed a bike, went for a cycle but the chain fell off. A man fixed it for me who later admitted he was a concert pianist. Ooops. The whole stay was absolutely magical. Go, if you’re in the area. Older: The Art of Iron.

The boy looks about seven or eight years old and should weigh next to nothing. And yet it takes four men to drag him out of the water. We soon realise why. Padlocked around his ankle is a thick metal chain, which plummets right down to the sea's bottom. If we want to save him, we have to pull up the chain. And whatever is at the end of it.'. Whatever it is, someone will come looking for it. Catherine Forde, author of Sugarcoated and Fatboy Swim. Silas’ story is compelling enough to keep the story a...

A Grand Feast of Emptiness – travel feature about our epic road trip through Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado and New Mexico. Lsquo;Need some help? Lsquo; No thanks,’ we tell him. ‘We’re just looking at the view.’ The farmer gives us that look, that look that says, crazy foreigners, and pulls off in a cloud of dust. Ldquo; When the dust gets high,’ sings Woody Guthrie on our car CD player, in the song Dust Bowl Blues. ‘You can’t even see the sky.’. The sky above, however, is clear and of the most vivid blue. ...
BOOK DOG | THOMAS QUINN: A26 | Roadkill | Pascal Garnier
http://thomasquinn.blogspot.com/2013/01/a26-roadkill-pascal-garnier.html
BOOK DOG THOMAS QUINN. One page at a time. Tuesday, 22 January 2013. A26 Roadkill Pascal Garnier. Pascal Garnier’s The A26. this is literary fiction with a hapless, desperate serial killer. At first Garnier seems intent on playing this for laughs as if the victims are utterly meaningless and that jars a bit. But as the book went on it began to really grip me. The truth that is revealed is that for these Frenchmen and women the war has never really ended, and they are the poorer for it. Stuck In A Book.
BOOK DOG | THOMAS QUINN: Has the Black Swan Stolen an Oscar?
http://thomasquinn.blogspot.com/2011/04/has-black-swan-stolen-oscar.html
BOOK DOG THOMAS QUINN. One page at a time. Friday, 1 April 2011. Has the Black Swan Stolen an Oscar? Will Natalie Portman one day come to regret ever taking the lead role in Black Swan. This Guardian blog sums up the case neatly enough. If that is the case, shouldn't the dancing have come across a little better? The dancing, at least the effort she put into it, regardless of the fact that it still looked less than you would see in a proper ballet, lifted the performance up two, three, ten levels. If ther...

BOOK DOG THOMAS QUINN. One page at a time. Monday, 10 June 2013. Goodbye Iain Banks Scottish author of The Wasp Factory, Culture, The Crow Road. The end when it came was far more sudden, far swifter than anyone had thought. Ian Rankin, his friend and fellow Fifer, in a touching, off the cuff, passionate tribute, told the BBC news last night. That even as recently as last Tuesday doctors had told the author that he had months rather than weeks to live. It turned out to be days. His Scottishness might have ...

BOOK DOG THOMAS QUINN. One page at a time. Tuesday, 22 January 2013. An Elk is for life, not just for Christmas. Doppler. The cover of Doppler. BOOK DOG | THOMAS QUINN: Pow! First impressions of a controversial Chinese literary POWerhouse

BOOK DOG THOMAS QUINN. One page at a time. Tuesday, 22 January 2013. First impressions of a controversial Chinese literary POWerhouse. Thinking about it, 2013 has to be the ideal time to focus on the big wide world. The last twelve months have, after all, been so bloody British: Jubilee, Olympics, about a dozen pageants, Dickens, Shakespeare, even Scottish independence. There were entire weeks when you wondered if the rest of the globe had shut down completely. I’m no Mo Yan expert (who is? I found it di...
