Rice Bean

Rice Bean /Ohwi and Ohashi. Mainly a warm weather or late summer annual, Rice Bean or Ricebean is a highly under rated legume. A close relative of the Adzuki bean, it is a wild and therefore easily grown vine that does well in an amazing variety of soils. They are very tasty when fresh and young but are a little difficult to extract from the pod without damage, so we find it best to allow the crop to fully mature and then harvest the dry beans to treat as a 'pulse' during winter.
Red Clover

The only clover that you don't have to pull out of the garden, this perennial is great to have in abundance. Red Clover grows best in full sun but has no problem with winter. It seems best situated with nothing else around it as it tends to sprawl a little wherever it likes. Red Clover flowers profusely and frequently which is perfect as it is the flower and seed that is of the greatest use to us. Seed germination is quick and strong and can be sown directly if you wish.
Barbados Pride

Red Bird of Paradise or Pride of Barbados. While technically, not an herb yet, this beautiful shrub which will do well in Australia in all but the coldest and driest of our areas. It has a strong ethno-botanical reputation as a medicinal plant with active ingredients in the leaves, flowers, bark and roots. We have not had the opportunity to test Barbados Pride to verify the claims as yet so we have nothing to report on it's usefulness.
Rosemary

This herb, of immense reputation as a culinary herb, is surprisingly easy to grow from seed. Germination is quite fast at around two weeks. It does get a little slower after that but if you want to plant a hedge or a traditional Cottage or Herb Garden, then seed is the way to go. It is dense, perennial, evergreen, aromatic and the bees love it when it is in flower. We very rarely dry the herb as there is always plenty on hand at any time of year.
Rainbow Chard

Swiss Chard or Rainbow Chard. Very, very showy in the vegetable garden, they look great and taste wonderful. Easy to strike from fresh seed and Rainbow Chard grow themselves well, as long as the ground is allowed to dry out between watering. High viability, so one pack of seed will usually do the season. Only the leaves and stems of Rainbow Chard are edible. This mix has red, white and yellow included.

Hippeastrum Seeds

Mixed variety Hippeastrum Seeds. Because it is impossible to guarantee a Hippeastrum variety from seed in all but laboratory conditions, we have mixed our seed to offer a range of variety and flower type per packet. We have been successful in raising these seeds by direct sowing into the sandy loam or just using the 'Flotation method'. Which is described in detail within my book. Once they have settled into the pot leave them there for another six months before moving them out into full sun.
