Becca Reads: The Glass House

http://www.beccareads.blogspot.com/2007/06/glass-house.html

Was a highlight of my life, and I am certain that visiting the Glass House. Will be another. Just reading about life there. Makes me tremble with excitement. So not me, but so eminently desirable. Jonathan Lethem and Ian McEwan. This passage from Lethem's review. Of McEwan's new novel gets it exactly right on what it's like to read a great novel (obviously I'm in the "delicious agony" camp) ( Atonement. Is one of the novels I experienced like this, another is Salman Rushdie's Shame. Also Julia Glass's first novel, and, though not every sentence, The Portrait of a Lady. I think I need to read some Jonathan Lethem) (and catch up on the Ian McEwan novels I've missed):. Posted by Becca at 10:11 PM.

New from Dorrance Publishing. A book about the differences in each of us; A woman rescues defective stuffed animals in this tail of family, unity, and love. M and I debated whether "tail" was purposeful. We think perhaps it is. But maybe not.). Posted by Becca at 10:15 PM. What I think about what I read. Jonathan Lethem and Ian McEwan. Here's something to read. Though I can't say how long it will be there. Edited to add: For now I'll be blogging about what I read there. Two blogs just seems like too much. Posted by Becca at 8:47 PM. What makes a 9/11 book? Certainly a book in which 9/11 is central to the plot, or a book that uses 9/11 as an occasion for significant reflection, is a 9/11 book (I'm thinking The Emperor's Children. And that Lynne Sharon Schwartz novel. And of course the Julia Glass novel. Posted by Becca at 11:54 AM.

I never heard of Sarah Hannah. Until I read her obituary. She committed suicide last week, at 40. Her poems. Posted by Becca at 8:51 AM. I wish I hadn't read anything about The Post-Birthday World. Before I read the book. I don't even want to check before I write this, but I'm quite sure Jenny loved it (when I got to the pie scenes, I remembered her quoting them), and I'm fairly certain that the Times. Review (was it the Times. Or, most recently, The Last of Her Kind. Or touch upon it obliquely. Better t...

Not Quite Sure: I Had a Very Nice Day Today

http://not-quite-sure.blogspot.com/2009/06/i-had-very-nice-day-today.html

There are a few things I'm sure about and a lot I'm not. Thursday, June 11, 2009. I Had a Very Nice Day Today. One of the (many) nice things about this work transition is that I am shifting from two days a week on site, to work at home (with potentially some very glamorous travel). So I had envisioned peace and tranquility, only it had not happened yet because of various meetings and events. But today I hit the platonic ideal of consultant working motherhood. I'm sure (Dawn, you haven't blogged since Tuesday- I'm the one who's supposed to be giving up on this, not you! Who has been reading since we. Does anyone remember the four years? Oh my goodness, it looks as if I did not blog the four years! Well, does anyone who knows me in real life remember the four years? Ever since, we have held to the mantra of four years. Kids: Ab...

Not Quite Sure: Why Thurston Moore Is a Dick

There are a few things I'm sure about and a lot I'm not. Saturday, March 08, 2014. Why Thurston Moore Is a Dick. Oh dear, is that paragraph too long for online writing? And I promise, it won't be worth that buildup. I'm going to say the thing I have to say, which is: I feel the same way about middle-aged men who leave their wives for younger women as I do about working mothers who decide to stay home with their children. Saturday, March 08, 2014 10:41:00 PM. Tuesday, March 11, 2014 9:38:00 AM. A hopeless...

There are a few things I'm sure about and a lot I'm not. Thursday, June 09, 2005. See You In a Bit. Some things I've been wanting to blog about:. How enchanting it is when E looks up at me and whispers, "You're beautiful.". Lionel Shriver's We Need to Talk About Kevin. And AL. Kennedy's Paradise. There are a few things I'm sure about and a lot I'm not. Wednesday, June 03, 2009. Television 2 (Sorry, No Tom Verlaine Here Either). On the other hand. There's been a lot of Zack and Cody. And Food Network, which we're used to. Then there's been The. Which is just a total delight, only to be enjoyed on sick days, given timing issues (if loving Ellen makes me banal and mainstream, I'll take it). Then there's reality TV. What Not to Wear. These are real people? I mean, obviously it's scripted and people b...

There are a few things I'm sure about and a lot I'm not. Tuesday, March 31, 2009. Self Esteem and the Reality-Based Community. I once gave what I still consider to be good advice to a friend who shall not be named. The advice was to pretend that she lived in the reality-based community. The musical value of Britney Spears? But I need it to write this post, so can I just leave it? Except, oh no, what if it disqualifies the whole post? Advice is much easier to give than to follow. Monday, March 30, 2009.

Not Quite Sure: Speaking of Shakespeare

http://not-quite-sure.blogspot.com/2009/06/speaking-of-shakespeare.html

There are a few things I'm sure about and a lot I'm not. Sunday, June 07, 2009. My first Shakespeare, or at least the first Shakespeare I remember, was a televised production of Much Ado About Nothing. Set just after World War I which I absolutely adored (could it be this. The hair looks right), though I did wonder for an embarassingly long time how a turn-of-the-17th-century writer could have set a play in the early 20th century (I really did). I was perhaps 9 or 12 or some such age. Which had a service...

Things wrong with the Truman Show. On: April 7, 2009. There are numerous things that I don’t like about the Truman show. First of all the world he lives in is so fake. I would hate to live in a society where everyone is always smiling and happy and chummy with one another. Everyone has bad days what would you do if you couldn’t sit down and like yell and vent to someone who understood how you were feeling. How would it feel to not know the joy of the smell of a rainy spring day? On: March 26, 2009. My ho...

Observations. Jennyisms. and other good stuff. Tuesday, July 24, 2007. I have it on good authority that there are A LOT of flowers in heaven. It was one of the last things that my father taught me. There was an error in this gadget. Sunday, February 27, 2011. I found this yummy home made chocolate pudding recipe on allrecipes.com. This is just as easy and quick to make as boxed pudding but tastes sooo much better! You can even fold in whipped topping to make it taste more like a mousse. 1/2 cup white sugar. 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder. 2 teaspoons vanilla extract. Melt In Your Mouth YUM! I found this amazingly rich and yummy recipe at Paula Deen's web site! But, oh so yummy! 8 T butter, melted.
