Silver Lining: October 2008

The Trevor and Becky Ray Family Blog Looking for the beautiful and lovely things in life. Wednesday, October 15, 2008. Every year, my family prepares a hand bell concert and plays in my parent's front yard the Monday before Christmas. We've just started practicing for the upcoming season. I think this will be the 6th or maybe 7th year. And then we have the concert. The music is beautiful. The coordinated movements of the polished bells, glowing in the dim light, is like watching a fire flicker in and...

The Trevor and Becky Ray Family Blog Looking for the beautiful and lovely things in life. Monday, April 5, 2010. Oh Easter, how we love thee. Rylan and Trevor in our front yard. Evie and Mom in our pretty dresses. Our pretty little girl. Yes, I am well aware that was blue and underlined. I'm not sure why, but I couldn't change it. Easter was wonderful. We had a beautiful breakfast and talked with Rylan about the Resurrection and that Jesus lives. He got an Easter basket full of chickies!

The Trevor and Becky Ray Family Blog Looking for the beautiful and lovely things in life. Sunday, June 6, 2010. I know yesterday will become one of just so many Saturdays if it's not recorded. And in reality, it wasn't that unique at all. It was just full of those little moments where I wish I could blink and catch life one frame at a time. I'm always very polite, too. No thank you, Ry.). We're cleaning (remember that part? I just read this aloud to Rylan and he wants me to write that he put the sprinkle...

Hamjambo!: Our Apartment

http://patiencedaren.blogspot.com/2010/06/our-apartment.html

Patience Daren, we're in Africa. Saturday, June 12, 2010. As promised (a long long time ago) here's what we've done with our apartment. First, this is the reason we relented to take an apartment without running water (we have it delivered in six 20 liter jerry cans every few days ). This isn't quite the full panorama, but its a nice sample of our view over the water. The Table is made from tree halves instead of planks. Our favorite wall hanging from Lamu - its the one in the office. Stove, fridge, fruit.

Hamjambo!: April 2010

http://patiencedaren.blogspot.com/2010_04_01_archive.html

Patience Daren, we're in Africa. Monday, April 19, 2010. Man Eaters and Friends. But when one rolls around in red dust to keep the flies and ticks, even the dull grey of an elephant hide gets a nice dusty sheen of rust. See for yourself. Okay, so these aren't the reddest elephants we saw, but they are the best pictures of elephants we took; we had to have seen close to 60 elephants in about 25 different groups (including individual bulls). Now about those man-eaters. Tons of these tall blondes about.

Hamjambo!: November 2009

http://patiencedaren.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html

Patience Daren, we're in Africa. Monday, November 30, 2009. Ignore the toilet paper. That's not what we're going to talk about to today. You're looking at Sunday's meal because it was only after our housemate. Layla started taking pictures and saying how it was the perfect time of day for doing so that we remembered we had a camera too. (If not for housemates you'd never see pics on here.) So. leaving me to roll out the chapati, Patience ran up to get the camera and. Put some flour in a bowl. Roll flat a...

Hamjambo!: February 2010

http://patiencedaren.blogspot.com/2010_02_01_archive.html

Patience Daren, we're in Africa. Saturday, February 13, 2010. Sunday, February 7, 2010. Day 5: a Foodie in Lamu. Day 5: Cinnamon Tea. But here in Lamu things are different. They have more tea! Here's Ali getting ready to serve up some tea. Day 4: a Foodie in Lamu. I've now had inter-island street cuisine. Friends rock! Day 3: a Foodie in Lamu. Thursday, February 4, 2010. Day 2: a Foodie in Lamu. Daren said the added flavorings really made it and he definitely preferred Lamu uji. Day 1: a Foodie in Lamu.

We keep promising them that we'll join them in their fast during the last week. but now that the last week has arrived we're feeling a little less committal. 14 hours of fasting seems light compared to the 24 hour fast we just finished today, but who wants to wake up at 4:30am for breakfast? Hamjambo!: Forodhani Gardens

http://patiencedaren.blogspot.com/2010/10/forodhani-gardens.html

Patience Daren, we're in Africa. Sunday, October 17, 2010. Lawns, planters, new Gazebo. Street lamps, new tree plantings. (this is facing the House of Wonders). Pavement, a new Seawall. Benches, trash bins (that's Patience). And, the food vendors have returned. Here's a closer look. That's not just chicken - there's lobster on some of those skewers. After dinner, a desert of nutella and banana or mango wrapped in an egg pastry. Patience displays the food. I eat it; mmm, a little hot (she got one too).

Hamjambo!: Festival in Malindi

http://patiencedaren.blogspot.com/2010/06/festival-in-malindi.html

Patience Daren, we're in Africa. Sunday, June 27, 2010. Daren says to apologize for the blurriness of some of the pictures. Apparently people tend to move when they're dancing). In addition to the dance festival, they had a women's night (for women's only dances), a lively forum for drug-treatment awareness, and a public seminar on Swahili identity. What's a festival without a good Kenyan footrace! Or some child acrobats. The Kamba group warms up before the main show. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

http://patiencedaren.blogspot.com/2010/06/flautist-on-farm.html

Patience Daren, we're in Africa. Tuesday, June 15, 2010. A Flautist on the Farm. Last week after finishing an interview with an mganga (traditional doctor), I heard some music outside his homestead. At first I thought it was radio, but the sound was much too clear. Since I happened to have a video camera in my hand I figured I should investigate. Enjoy! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Hamjambo!: Chess and other things

http://patiencedaren.blogspot.com/2010/08/chess-and-other-things.html

Patience Daren, we're in Africa. Wednesday, August 11, 2010. Chess and other things. A few weeks ago we went to Nairobi to get Patience's Dependant's Pass/Visa. We never quite got the pass, but the nice immigration supervisor gave Patience another three months in the country while they finish processing it. But while we were holding out hope for the pass, we spent a glorious two weeks at a friends apartment with running water, fresh sheets, furniture (not just a bed! Baobab fiber bag (or cheaper if made ...

Sunday, January 1, 2012. Once again it's time for New Year's Resolutions.great things to make and break! I know a few years ago I was trying to post every week so I'm going to try it again. We had Christmas over at my parents house after church with them and than dinner was there as well. Somehow we forgot to make the mashed potatoes during all the food prep but thankfully my parents had potato pearls from the cannery so we were able to have some sort of potatoes! Becky and Zac (+1) | One more day Oler

Becky and Zac ( 1). One more day Oler. So a lot has happened since my last post. I feel like just about as much stuff has happened in two months as it did all last year. Around February 2nd I started having some pretty strong contractions. They were strong enough that I went to the hospital once to get checked out and then had a non stress test in the office. Both times they sent me home to take some sleep aids to get the contractions to stop since I was not due until the 25th. 6lbs 10oz and 19inches long.
