Route 66 ...... Home

Route 66 . Home. We finally made it home about midnight, exhausted and I asked myself did I really do this trip? Sadly, it was over. In Arkansas, this RV didn't make it and I certainly hope the passengers were ok. Traffic was backed up for miles. Had a big o' cheeseburger here. The old cars were visitors who were traveling Route 66, and not part of the display. An original piece of old 66 pavement in the museum. As if he's saying, "And just what are you looking at? But oh so good. As was this one. Click ...

Route 66 . Home. The Painted Desert Inn built in 1937-1940. It closed in 1963 and demolition was scheduled in the 1970's. This was protested and then it was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1987. It reopened as a museum in 2006. The Painted Desert. We weren't there at the right time to capture the light to show the best colors. It was named this because it looks like the colors of a sunset. The Native Indians lived here for a few hundred years and then vanished. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

June 2009 Road Trip. A railroad trestle that been out of use a long, long time. Another one of Nathan's nature shots. Well, when you gotta go you gotta go. The sun sets on another day. I wonder who lived in this house and what they did. This was once a motel. Glenrio, Texas. This motel is right on the Texas/New Mexico border. The sign states this motel is the "First motel in Texas" on one side and "Last motel in Texas" on the other side. This place has also seen better days. Where do you want to go?

June 2009 Road Trip. The ramps near an old 'filling station' were left here a long time ago. They are embedded in the side of the tree trunk. The ramps were here first and the tree grew up between them. I do believe they've been sittin' a while. And another dead end. Nathan with an Illinois shield and fighting the wind. A small pond with white caps. A looming thunderstorm ahead. The wind was incredible. Well, maybe just wishful thinking. Leaving Springfield and the Lauderbach Giant.

June 2009 Road Trip. The House of Representatives where Lincoln lay in state. The court room in the old court house. The Lincoln law office. Several blocks around the Lincoln home have been preserved as they were during Lincoln's time there. Definitely worth visiting. The train station burned recently so this building is a replica but these orginal steps were found under a part of the building that had been built above the older one. Lincoln walked on them? There was an eerie feeling here.

June 2009 Road Trip. Erick, Oklahoma is home to Roger Miller (King of the Road) and Sheb Wooley (Purple People Eater). This place is almost a ghost town. My view of the same courthouse. Screen shot from the Grapes of Wrath as the Joads pass by the Sayre Oklahoma courthouse. A mural and a little bar. Very good museum here too. Lucille's gas station closed since her passing in 2005. Lucille's Roadhouse is open just up the road with great food. March 8, 2011 at 8:26 PM. December 27, 2012 at 8:49 PM. Whats u...
