Le mot hollandais pour ‘ lion. Autrefois on écrivait souvent ‘ leeu. De Witte Leeu ou De Witte Leeuw est un nom employé assez généralement depuis le moyen-âge. Aussi bien aux Pays-Bas qu’en Flandres il était (et il est) utilisé pour des marques de bières locales ou régionales, pour des auberges et pour des buvettes.

Auf der anderen Seite des Kanals auf nummer 277 unserem Haus gegenüber, Oudegracht 249, gab es zu der Zeit eine Brauerei, die denselben Namen trug. Einer der Eigentümer hat nach einem Dokument aus 1678 in unserem Haus gewohnt. Unser Haus ist mit großer Sicherheit schon vor 1500 gebaut worden!
