A Place of the Way of Beekeeping. Sunday, February 27, 2011. The First Flower - Spring 2011. Saw this flower today, the first one this spring. Hang in there honeys, better days are coming. Sunday, February 20, 2011. Tourist among the Ruins. Friday was a "use it or loose it" vacation day for me and I had a slew of things on my to-do list. I had a ticket to hear a talk by Dr. Tom Seeley that had been arranged by NYC Beekeeping. For the next day in Manhattan.). And trying to put together a map showing the l...
Beekeeper's Dojo: The "Bright" (or at least "Smoky") side of Hurricane Sandy
http://beekeepersdojo.blogspot.com/2012/11/the-bright-or-at-least-smoky-side-of.html
A Place of the Way of Beekeeping. Friday, November 9, 2012. The "Bright" (or at least "Smoky") side of Hurricane Sandy. For beekeepers, there is at least one bright side to some of the destruction caused by Hurricane Sandy: With all the fallen or damaged trees that need to be chain-sawed, there is a LOT of free smoker fuel just lying around on the ground. Gather ye wood chips while you may. Use the sawdust lying on the ground where those trees were cut up for fuel for your smoker. View my complete profile.
Beekeeper's Dojo: June 2011
http://beekeepersdojo.blogspot.com/2011_06_01_archive.html
A Place of the Way of Beekeeping. Monday, June 20, 2011. Backyard Hive Port with floating Hive Carrier. My version of Urban Beekeeping. My bees did not make it through the winter. I figured that with all the other new beekeepers in the City last year that the chances of catching a swarm were good. Instead of ordering a new package of bees to replace my dead bees, I ordered a swarm lure and planned on catching a swarm. Two-nuc high swarm trap. Bees going in and out of swarm trap. After the brown paint dri...
Beekeeper's Dojo: September 2010
http://beekeepersdojo.blogspot.com/2010_09_01_archive.html
A Place of the Way of Beekeeping. Wednesday, September 29, 2010. Bee on the salt shaker: What do you do? I was preparing lunch this morning in my kitchen and reached for the salt shaker. On the top of the salt shaker was a honey bee. She probably flew in through a gap in the cat door last night, attracted by the neon lights in the kitchen. What would you do? Pick up some solid object and try and smash it? This would be a violation of Rule One of beekeeping. Sunday, September 26, 2010. If you want frequen...
Beekeeper's Dojo: December 2010
http://beekeepersdojo.blogspot.com/2010_12_01_archive.html
A Place of the Way of Beekeeping. Monday, December 27, 2010. Hive with Snow Cap. This photo was taken from my kitchen window in Brooklyn at noon on Monday, December 27, 2010. The hive base can barely be seen at the snow line. Hidden by the snow is a hive stand that is held up by a piece of plywood on top of a shipping pallet raised above the ground by plastic coke crates. I estimate the snow is over three feet deep below the hive. Sunday, December 26, 2010. Here's the link to the MP3. There was a gap in ...
Beekeeper's Dojo: An Anti-Ant Mini-Stand
http://beekeepersdojo.blogspot.com/2011/08/anti-ant-mini-stand.html
A Place of the Way of Beekeeping. Tuesday, August 23, 2011. The screened bottom board that came with the new 8-frame hive equipment I ordered this year to save my back did not come equipped with a slot for a varroa sticky board. I built a square frame out of some scrap wood I found and painted it the same color as my hive. I tried shaking cinnamon around the top of the Hive Carrier. This seemed to do the trick. This morning when I opened the tank I found only a few ants. I believe this small grou...A few...

Beekeeper's Dojo: January 2011

A Place of the Way of Beekeeping. Saturday, January 29, 2011. What a differance a day makes: the Snow Hive Melt Down one day later. This picture was taken 24 hours after the image in the previous post. The snow on the side has melted and fallen down and away from the lower hive body. The hive is in a shaded alcove caused by extensions on the buildings on each side of my fully attached house. Daytime temperatures only got up to 37 degrees for a short time the day after the storm. Thursday, January 27, 2011.

Blessed Bees
My name is Wendolyn and welcome. My interest in bees started several years ago. My grandfather kept about 30 hives at one time and my father helped him take care of the bees. I wanted to create memories with my father and knew that keeping bees would be a great way to do that. Special thanks to Custom Upholstering and Total Restorations in Marshall, VA www.total-restorations.com. For sponsoring four of the beehives.
