Adventures in 4th Year Beekeeping. Bee Check – April 27. April 27, 2014. Assistant bee keeper helps choose which drawn frames to give to the Italian hive. Today’s theme is: Bad bee space is bad. Two weeks ago (April 13), we checked the hives, the Italian colony looked like it was doing good, and the Carniolan hive was of unknown status. Both colonies were foraging, and we saw evidence of pollen and nectar collection. With this visit, our objectives were:. Verify presence of Italian queen. I opened up the...

Adventures in 4th Year Beekeeping. May 3, 2016 (Tuesday). May 3, 2016. Went to pick up nuc boxes from apiary. Both colonies were bringing in pollen. The pollen was very dark in color and blended in with the bees’ bodies. The colony whose queen we saw (D1) completely ignored me. I peeked under the cover and saw bees munching on the pollen patty. April 29, 2016. Bees I’m getting:. What I have that will go into the initial hive (8 frame ruhl/brushy mountain equipment):. 1 slatted rack (wish I had two).

Adventures in 4th Year Beekeeping. Another One Bites the Dust. October 13, 2014. Our mentor for the Oregon Master Beekeepers Apprentice program came to visit our modest apiary yesterday. As soon as we opened the Carniolan colony my heart sank. There were all of two bees walking around in the top. There was plenty of honey. There were two yellow jackets eating the honey. There was a small assortment of bees in the bottom of the hive. No queen. We blame the yellow jackets. Filed Under: Hive Inspection.
