BeerViking: Something's brewing in Highbury
http://blog.beerviking.net/2015/06/somethings-brewing-in-highbury.html
Writer, beer-lover, and part-time Viking. Sunday, 14 June 2015. Something's brewing in Highbury. 65279;London's newest brewpub opened last week. The Brewhouse and Kitchen Highbury is a sibling to the B&K Islington, and it too returns to the city a lost brewery: in this case the brewing kit was formerly in the Lamb in Chiswick. Best of the lot for me were the Illustrator Black IPA, named for Charles Dickens' illustrator, who was local, and the No.19 Brown Porter, named for the nearby bus route, but th...

BeerViking: Fourpure pushes the boat out
http://blog.beerviking.net/2015/06/fourpure-pushes-boat-out.html
Writer, beer-lover, and part-time Viking. Monday, 15 June 2015. Fourpure pushes the boat out. The evolution and growth of new London microbrewery Fourpure. Why was my Pale Ale leaning? So when the invitation arrived to the launch of two more new Fourpure beers, I knew I wanted to be there. We weren't at the brewery this time but at Mother Kelly's. The new beers this time were a draught American-style wheat ale called Skyliner, a dry-hopped version of Fourpure's well-regarded (and canned) Pils, and a semi...

BeerViking: Moor Weird beer please!
http://blog.beerviking.net/2015/07/moor-weird-beer-please.html
Writer, beer-lover, and part-time Viking. Tuesday, 7 July 2015. Moor Weird beer please! Are brewery taproom visits like buses – you wait for ages, then two come along at once? Maybe it's something to do with the great weather too, but either way, it's been a fruitful weekend, meeting family at Moor Beer. In Bristol on Saturday, then cycling with the tribe to Weird Beard's open day in Hanwell on Sunday. If there's a tiny gripe (apart from the lack of cask ale! Then on Sunday was one of Weird Beard. The tr...

BeerViking: Beck's crafty triad is less inspired than it claims
http://blog.beerviking.net/2015/08/becks-crafty-triad-is-less-inspired.html
Writer, beer-lover, and part-time Viking. Wednesday, 12 August 2015. Beck's crafty triad is less inspired than it claims. So earlier this year, the boys from Bremen made their pitch for the craft beer market with the launch of three new beers, Beck's Pale Ale, 1873 Pils and Amber Lager - and atl ast I have managed to catch up with all three. Meanwhile the "Inspired by Germany" 1873 Pils at 6% is more uninspired than inspired. Grainy, dry-bitter and rather one-dimensional, it exemplifies those unimagi...

BeerViking: May 2015
http://blog.beerviking.net/2015_05_01_archive.html
Writer, beer-lover, and part-time Viking. Thursday, 14 May 2015. 65279;Bloody grapefruit beers! A passing reference by The Beer Nut. To a Polish grapefruit-Weizen Radler reminded me that this is also one of the fastest growing beer-mixes in Germany. The best-known, and probably the best-seller, is almost certainly Schöfferhofer Grapefruit, but pretty much every larger brewery now seems to do a grapefruit Radler – and yes, they all call it grapefruit rather than the older German name, pampelmuse. And sure...

BeerViking: October 2014
http://blog.beerviking.net/2014_10_01_archive.html
Writer, beer-lover, and part-time Viking. Friday, 31 October 2014. The problem with pumpkins. Have you found any decent Hallowe'en beers this year? They've become something of a staple in the UK, and are starting to appear now in other European countries too, even though none of it reaches the heights of obsessiveness that American drinkers must endure. One pumpkin beer that's fairly widely available is Wychwood's Pumpking. The best so far for not being over-spiced was this year's London Fields Brewery.

BeerViking: January 2015
http://blog.beerviking.net/2015_01_01_archive.html
Writer, beer-lover, and part-time Viking. Thursday, 22 January 2015. Fuller's to close the Harp - but only for 10 days. Last night I paid a visit to the Admiralty. Fuller's new flagship pub (ho-ho) on Trafalgar Square, just around the corner from Admiralty Arch, and what nice job they've done with it. Although how do they get permission to have white ensigns hanging up inside - I thought they were only for HM's ships and shore stations? So with the Harp due to close for 10 days from February 16th, they w...

BeerViking: September 2014
http://blog.beerviking.net/2014_09_01_archive.html
Writer, beer-lover, and part-time Viking. Thursday, 25 September 2014. Cask Ale Week brings 18,000 beers and free pints. 65279; Cask Ale Week 2014. Starts today, although as it runs until Sunday 5th October I suppose it's really only a week if, like the mad French revolutionaries, you support a decimal week of 10 days. Anyhoo. There's all sorts of things going on, including free beer, meet-the-brewer sessions, festivals, ale trails and so on. And there 's the launch of this year's Cask Report. Register o...

BeerViking: For goodness Saké
http://blog.beerviking.net/2015/07/for-goodness-sake.html
Writer, beer-lover, and part-time Viking. Saturday, 18 July 2015. 65279;For goodness Saké. 8220;Saké, that's that Japanese rice wine, isn't it? 8221; For most of us this is probably the limit of our understanding, perhaps augmented by having had hot saké after a meal at a noodle or sushi restaurant – certainly it was my understanding until not very long ago. For a start, while it is usually considered a wine, its production. And of course the more you polish away the less is left to mash and ferment so t...
