Summer surprise | Miss Apis Mellifera
https://missapismellifera.com/2015/07/12/summer-surprise
Adventures of an aromatherapy beekeeper. Skip to primary content. July 12, 2015. Our first summer in the Crooked House is passing quickly. The blue tit family has flown away and the mason bees are sealed behind mud doors. This year’s crop tastes of blackberries and lime. My kitchen was filled with the smell of freshly spun comb after I took three frames of honey from Queen Melissa’s hive. The comb dripped generously as the wax caps were taken off. I returned the wet frames to the supers for the bees to c...
Happy Hour at the Top Bar: Buttercup Can't Catch a Break
http://happyhourtopbar.blogspot.com/2015/07/buttercup-cant-catch-break.html
Why Top Bar Hives? Friday, July 31, 2015. Buttercup Can't Catch a Break. I hate being woken up by my DH in the morning, but not for the reason you might think. Normally, I'm the first one up around 5 or 6 am, so if my DH wakes me up, it's because there's bad news. These bees were on the outside and drowned in the rain. Sling for holding comb. Masking tape will work, too. And yes, I was soooo relieved to have not stepped on her.). Cluster of bees starting to form on the ground. Instead, I just moved her s...

5 WAYS TO HELP A FAILING HIVE. November 7, 2016. If you are inspecting your hives regularly, you can usually see the end coming. When a colony starts to fail, it can be challenging to figure out why, let alone solve the issue. So, what can a beekeeper do to help their bees? Read on to find out about some catchall techniques that might reverse the course of a crashing hive. 1 Reduce entrance and hive cavity. 3 Add capped brood. 4 Treat for mites? 5 Check the queen. First of all, make sure you have a queen.

The Prospect of Bees. Clarissa is Beeful Once More. Posted by theprospectofbees under Uncategorized. Yesterday morning we picked up our anklebiter nuc. But sadly the rain discouraged us from trying to hive them right away. Instead we sat the nuc on a bench in front of Clarissa and opened the entrance. This would allow bolder foragers to take advantage of breaks in the rain to orient on the correct general surroundings even though the home they have known would soon vanish. Will acquire another step.

Adventures of an aromatherapy beekeeper. Skip to primary content. Skip to secondary content. A beekeeper’s notes for July. July 25, 2015. The supers were placed on the floor and the frames decapped on a work bench. In the corner of the room a new manual steel extractor, kindly gifted by the lovely people at DK Publishing (more on that in another post), spun out the honey beautifully. Later that evening we drove Emily home and got treated to a curry by Drew for all our hard work. The honey has sat in my k...

A box full of bees. Inside an ancient bluebell wood →. Beekeeping – the frantic way. April 19, 2015. I think I can now safely say that all of our five colonies made it through winter. I am not completely satisfied with this result as two are small, only on about four to five frames. A perfect result would have been five booming colonies with brood boxes full to the brim. Lots of beautiful blossom out now for the bees. Bluebells at the Ealing apiary. Bluebells under a tree at the allotment. They used to g...

Getting my bee-jo back. How warm is your bra and are you afraid of ants? The queen who went in the wrong place. May 16, 2015. Today I found a mystery awaiting me at the allotment. Ever seen this many bees. And bees with pollen disappearing within their midst? Usually you might get maybe a couple of bees wandering around under the floor. I had several thousand. I had a look through the hive to see if that might help solve the mystery. And found these:. The curious thing is, queens are only supposed to be ...

Bees with Guns - run for your hives
Run for your hives. September 16, 2013. By james.lischeske@gmail.com. Now that the Kickstarter campaign is over (huge thanks to everyone who contributed, by the way), I figured it would be better to not have the video we made for that campaign just disappear into the internet ether. So, here’s a link to it on youtube! We talk a lot about why we play music, why we’re releasing an EP, why we call it schematics, and why Ben’s amp is so heavy. If you haven’t seen yet, check it out!
