Here is a stringout of nearly all of the clips I gathered this summer of beetles swimming through resin (more beetles resin than anyone could ever want). Some clips are at 24x speed. Featuring small things (insects), big things (trees), video, and New Jersey. Skip to primary content. Sources / Further Reading. December 16, 2012. At long last I’m back to work, and I just threw together all the clips I had from the inside of SPB-attacked-tree bark. It’s pretty fun to watch these microscopic mites running around on the fungus they seem to cultivate (that’s the famous blue stain fungus). As my professor said, it’s a jungle in there:. High in the trees | Dartmouth Bio FSP

https://dartmouthbiofsp.wordpress.com/2015/01/29/high-in-the-trees

High in the trees. January 29, 2015. If asked to think of a rain forest, most people probably imagine a wall of green stuff dripping with rain water, and insects eating you up. In fact, the cloud forest is very different. The forest floor is pretty open, the canopy shades the ground, and we haven’t been bothered by biting insects at all. It’s still pretty wet, though. Cool kids in the. Cloud forest. The forest behind them is open enough to walk through. Looking out over an open area. High in the clouds.

All posts by biofsp. February 9, 2015. Most people are familiar with how the Black Widow spider eats the male after they’ve mated for nutrition (or maybe just because she can). That’s how they get their name. Black Widows aren’t the only arthropods who do crazy stuff, however. Here’s a list of a few more cool insects:. Looks like a kung fu fighter. Catches hummingbirds. Female eats the head of the male as they mate. He keeps going anyway. Master of the universe. Are we learning anything here? Some phytot...

Poles Apart: From the Arctic to the Tropics. January 23, 2015. We’re not in Greenland anymore. The minute we got off the bus at our first station the Palo Verde National Park I immediately felt a wall of intense heat smack me in the face. And here I am in Costa Rica, measuring soil moisture in the same way I analyzed our Greenlandic samples back in Hanover! As a budd...

https://dartmouthbiofsp.wordpress.com/2015/01/28/high-in-the-clouds

High in the clouds. January 28, 2015. Your archetypical rain forest comes in many flavors, one of them being cloud forest. Green mountain, is a cloud forest biological reserve near a small town. View from the window at Monteverde biological research station. This cloud forest is anything but jungle, as jungle in the biological sense refers to the impenetrable brush that grows once you cut down the forest. The wall of stuff at the edge of the forest on the left in the picture above is pretty telling.

Beetle Killed Longboards

Longboards is a product concept inspired by the problems of Mountain Pine Beetle infestations in North America. Because of drought and warmer winters, Mountain Pine Beetles have devastated millions of acres of forests and don’t show signs of slowing their destruction. The longboards make use of these dead trees and aim to spread awareness of the issue, while celebrating the American culture’s strong connection to outdoor recreation and encouraging a more sustainable type of transportation.
