An upmarket bee hotel at Uppsala botanical garden. August 6, 2015. Yesterday, I visited Linnaeus’s garden and the botanical garden in Uppsala. To my delight, there were beehives in both gardens AND a sample of a perfect bee hotel for solitary bees. I can feel a building project in our own garden coming on. Liquid honey nothing but sweetness and light! August 10, 2015. Straight from the hive into a jar this time. The last honey super we took was not fully capped so it contains more water than the rest. So this lot needs to be consumed as soon as possible, otherwise it might ferment. It has the most wonderful taste. Clever things, these bees of ours. Oxalic acid a new way. Top left: The vapouriser, primed with liquid oxalic acid in the transparent chamber. Top right: Testing the vapour after lighting the gas cannister. Last year, we gave our colonies a last varroa treatment with oxalic acid using a method that necessitated opening the hives and dripping the treatment onto the frames:. A little oxalic acid never hurt anyone.

Söndag 24 maj 2015. Idag satte jag ihop mina 24 parningssamhällen. Vädret är fortsatt kallt, bara ca 12 grader. Endast enstaka bin var ute och flög. Normalt är jag inte inne och stör mina samhällen när det är så kallt men eftersom drottningcellerna börjar att kläckas imorgon så var jag tvungen. Varje parningsamhälle får minst en (täckt) yngelram, samt en foderram. Tredje ramen kan vara lite vad som helst beroende på vad som finns i yngellådan. Fredag 29 mars 2013. Det är en sen vår. Bina har haft få dagar då dom har kunnat vara ute och rensningsflyga. Lyckligtvis verkar inget av samhällena haft utsot inne i kupan men på kuporna och överallt runtomkring finns det massor av fläckar. Tidigare år har det inte varit på detta sättet, hoppas att allt är väl i kuporna. Kan det bero på det kraftiga ljungdraget som vi hade i höstas? Tänkte spraya tak och utsidan på kuporna med VirkonS och sedan tvätta rent. Allt för att förhindra ev smittspridning.

Måndag 9 februari 2015. Idag var det dags för årets rensningsflykt. Fullt av gula fläckar i snön runt huset när jag kom hem från jobbet. I flustrens spärrgaller (musskydd) satt det många döda bin som städpatrullen försökt släpa ur kupan. Jag öppnade upp och rensade bort de flesta. Tills vidare får dom stå öppna, det skall ju bli lika fint väder imorgon som det var idag. Sol, 11 grader varmt och svag vind. Såhär såg det ut vid mina övervintrade parningskupor. Fredag 31 maj 2013. Idag var det dags att kontrollera alla ramarna efter drottningceller på kupa 1 och 2. Dom blev ju drottninglösa när jag gjorde mina två nya avläggare i förra veckan. Jag markerade ju med blå tejp vilka ramar som jag skrapat bort cellväggar på för att bina lättare skulle bygga viseceller. Det såg ut att ha fungerat, men bara på de ramar som innehöll ljust vax. På den gamla mörka kakan var det inte byggt några celler trots skrapning. Fördelen är att jag alltid kan ha fem ramar i kupan.

Söndag 21 april 2013. Idag var det dags att checkerborda kuporna samt att sätta in drönarramarna. Jag har förberett 8 lådor med utbyggt vax. Genom att bryta upp honungsramarna i den översta lådan med varannan tom utbyggd ram får man en raketstart på samhället. Samtidigt sätter man in drönarramen i låda nr tre, tredje ramen från höger. Ordning och reda är bra så man vet var man har sakerna. Förra året gjorde jag detta den 22 mars. Våren är ca 1 månad senare i år. Samtliga samhällen har gott om foder kvar.

Onsdag 21 maj 2014. Resultatet av den första omlarvningen blev 50%. Det blev 9 av 14 larver på odlingslisten och 1 av 6 på de enskilda cellkopparna. Totalt 10 av 20 lyckades. Undrar varför det blev så stor skillnad? Förutsättningarna var ju lika för båda? Cellerna som byggts var stora och fina så jag är ganska nöjd. Satte på burar och flyttade in drottningcellerna i kläckskåpet där dom får vara tills dom krypet ut. Torsdag 15 maj 2014. Klämmer ihop ramarna så gott det går. Odlingslådan består av 2 ramar ...

Onsdag 20 maj 2015. Täckta drottningceller till äggkläckaren. Idag plockade jag in dom täckta drottningcellerna till äggkläckaren. Vädret var inte det bästa, mulet och bara 11-12 grader varmt. Bina var på hugget. Men jag var redan en dag sen eftersom jag jobbade hela dagen igår så det var tvunget att göras idag. Imorgon är dom extra känsliga för störningar. Resultatet var över förväntan! För att hjälpa bina att dra upp cellerna så har jag stödmatat dom med 50% honungslösning i en foderlåda. Sprayade lite...

Lördag 14 juni 2014. Årets drottningodling har börjat mycket bra. Vädret har varit perfekt och ungdrottningarna har haft bra förutsättningar för att flyga ut och para sig. Idag märkte jag de första med en grön nummerbricka och skickade ut en annons till föreningens medlemmar så att dom får en första tjing att köpa innan jag annonserar på forum etc. Så här ser dom ut.
