Flying In Tow – raising a nonconformist
https://raisinganonconformist.wordpress.com/2015/03/15/flying-in-tow
Living with autism spectrum disorder. A lot can happen during this time. And as Murphy’s chosen child, more often than not, I find myself in situations where a lot does happen 🙂. Madhav did all this and more. And airports started to give me the jitters. In the last five years I have figured quite a few things. For instance, they will burst the balloon at security check- so have enough in stock. You can carry a deflated balloon alright but an inflated one cannot pass security, Sir! March 15, 2015. 1I have...

Embrace the Joy of your Special One – raising a nonconformist
https://raisinganonconformist.wordpress.com/2014/12/01/embrace-the-joy-of-your-special-one
Living with autism spectrum disorder. Embrace the Joy of your Special One. Then one goes through a plethora of emotions- despair, anxiety, fear and even hopelessness. People with severe cases grieve for the future that could have been for their child- a future they would have wanted to see. There is depression, breakdowns, mood swings the works. And last but not the least; you are not responsible for your child’s autism or any disability. You are not paying for a bad karma from past life if in this l...

Another Leap of Faith – raising a nonconformist
https://raisinganonconformist.wordpress.com/2015/09/26/another-leap-of-faith
Living with autism spectrum disorder. Another Leap of Faith. Time’s on Red Bull for us. I can’t believe its October already and over three months since I last wrote. Rest assured, a long hiatus is always about a tornado of change hitting us and so tons to talk about. There is a lot of stress on dynamic thinking in RDI and it is one of the key behaviours that have to be cultivated. Simply put, the child has to learn to use his own brains as against following instructions. No doubt RDI is tougher t...I don...

My Daddy Strongest!! – raising a nonconformist
https://raisinganonconformist.wordpress.com/2015/06/21/my-daddy-strongest
Living with autism spectrum disorder. So , It’s father’s day today. And I write about the man who is a ‘special dad’ to my ‘special son’. Gaurav has battled with his father’s bipolar depression for over two decades now. When I met him in his twenties he was already a man who had to grow up too early in life. He was calm, sorted and had held himself together through all the ups and downs of seeing a parent suffer ill health. June 21, 2015. June 20, 2015. Discovering the Right Buttons. Problem Behaviour – raising a nonconformist
https://raisinganonconformist.wordpress.com/2015/01/18/problem-behaviour
Living with autism spectrum disorder. Support Groups are big levelers. Firstly you realize that it’s not just your own household that’s crazy, quirky, high on adrenalin with yo-yo like highs and lows but also, that there are ways and methods of dealing with problem behavior that manifests in various ways but could essentially stem out of same premise. Lack of communication is the most challenging bit. Tough to understand why a child maybe hitting his hand or leg repeatedly if he can’t say that it’s a...

Separation Anxiety – raising a nonconformist
https://raisinganonconformist.wordpress.com/2014/12/16/separation-anxiety
Living with autism spectrum disorder. The holidays were my desperate breaks and yes I needed them since I am not an ‘in your face mommy’. Madhav was and still is a happy chappy. He would need to see one of his parents or his nanny to be anywhere with anybody. Well…those were the days. Gradually you increase the time. While the child is anxious try warm baths, massages and breathing exercises. Music almost all the time works in calming madhav down. And parents should definitely work on separat...I always ...

Living with autism spectrum disorder. Boundaries and the Lack of them. Think the costume guy rented white swans to some other school and so we are all hens now. Apart from that a frantic call to A and A (my closest friend and her 7 year old daughter) to coordinate Madhav’s school drop on the day am flying out as I also have a shoot lined up in Delhi. .phew! Yoga for the Special Child – raising a nonconformist
https://raisinganonconformist.wordpress.com/2017/01/10/yoga-for-the-special-child
Living with autism spectrum disorder. Yoga for the Special Child. Serendipity is one of my favorite words. And life indeed is about beautiful coincidences…. I last wrote a blog in November and it caught someone’s eye. A lovely old colleague of mine from my news-desk days. She asked me if I had heard about Sonia Sumar also known as Sivakami – I had not. She just said, Well if you can take your boy to her and learn yoga from her it will be the biggest gift you can give yourself and him . Now how is yoga fo...

My Little Phelps – raising a nonconformist
https://raisinganonconformist.wordpress.com/2015/04/26/my-little-phelps
Living with autism spectrum disorder. Swimming calms his down, tires him, pushes his appetite and keeps him occupied. I am also reading more on aqua therapy and occupation a therapy (OT) in water. So we hope to maximise on his love for water. Btw, inspired by my swimming success with him- we thought we could experiment with skating too. We bought the expensive gear and hired a coach only to realise the boy HATES IT! Hmmm… better luck next time I guess. There he is…. April 26, 2015. April 26, 2015. Intern...
