If you are interested in acquiring School Trust Land, the Board will consider land trade proposals. A Nebraska statute allows the Board to enter into such land trades. However, in order to enter into a trade, the Board- -consistent with the Nebraska statute- -must receive a significant benefit as a result of the trade. Early in our country’s history, Congress decided that education was extremely important. The problem was: how to fund public education? Since there was little money, but lots of land, Congress, under the leadership of Thomas Jefferson, gave land grants for public education to new states as they came into the Union. Contrary to a common belief, our Board pays county real estate taxes on its land just like any other land owner. For example, the board paid approximately $9.061 million in real estate taxes for 2014. The Board does not receive funding from the state. Thus, no tax money is received by the Board and all funding for the Board’s operations comes from its leasing operations.
