Craig Bell, beekeeper, became interested in local, raw honey in 2001 to help his wife, Wendy, with allergies. After encountering a swarm of bees and consulting with a long-time beekeeper in Camden SC, he began keeping bees as a hobby, with just two colonies. His colonies have grown so that he now tends over a thousand honeybee colonies scattered all over South Carolina. Q- Do you get stung? Q- How do bees make different varieties of honey? Q- How long do bees live? A- 30,000 - 50,000. A- 11,000 times.

Agua de Sandia (Watermelon). 1 medium watermelon, peeled, seeded and chopped. 1 to 1-1/2 cups honey. 2 limes, thinly sliced, optional. Place chopped watermelon in blender. Add 1 cup water and 1 cup of Bell Honey Companys South Carolina honey. Puree fruit until smooth, this will require several batches. Pour puree into a pitcher and add remaining water. Stir until combined. Taste for sweetness. If necessary, add additional 1/2 cup of honey.

How do bees make honey? When a honey bee takes nectar from a flower, she stores it in a honey sack. When this honey sack is full, she returns to the hive, deposits the drop of nectar into the honeycomb, and evaporates the water out of the nectar by fanning her wings.
