Monday, August 17, 2015. Benched Week 85: longing for simplicity. The sun was bright on my center-city Philly bench. We had just come out of the dark stuffiness of the church where my brother-in-law, Bernie, is an organist. He had treated us to a brief tour, as well as a sample of the music he could perform on the powerful instrument. The sanctuary had been impressive in its complicated, ornate decorations and statuaries of saints. I’ve been pondering much in the last three weeks. Turning my gaze inward,...

Benched: May 2015

http://www.benchedman.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html

Monday, May 25, 2015. Benched Week 78: master class. A bluebird landed ten yards ahead, as my good friend, Scott, and I emerged from the woods. I fumbled with my camera, eager to catch the wonderful juxtaposition of the brilliant bird on a dark, weathered sign. I checked the settings, raised the long lens, and…. I hadn’t been ready. But that’s why Scott and I had each set aside this day from our busy travel schedules:. A little later, we came across this butterfly. But videos and web-guides are a pale co...

Benched: Benched Week 82: I steal scenes

http://www.benchedman.blogspot.com/2015/06/benched-week-82-i-steal-scenes.html

Sunday, June 28, 2015. Benched Week 82: I steal scenes. Artists are like go-betweens. On one side of them is life, humming along with a myriad of moments. On the other side is an audience. The artist’s job is to grab one of those fleeting experiences - one that, hopefully, captures a bit of the beauty or the mystery or the truth of life, and hold it up for the audience to see. I think of this as I sit on this week’s bench. Followed by a sweet vignette of a man pointing out aquatic life to his grandchild.

Benched: July 2015

http://www.benchedman.blogspot.com/2015_07_01_archive.html

Monday, July 13, 2015. Benched Week 84: break up the bricks. During my first photography course in art school,. I had a “you’ve-got-to-be-kidding-me” moment. A fellow student brought in his series of photos, every last one focused on a different crack in a sidewalk. I don’t know if this was a serious attempt at minimalism or a last-minute desperation play, but I thought it was exceedingly silly. This is the interplay at work in creativity. For ideas to thrive, they need what I call a loose framework.

Benched: Benched Week 81: prepared surprises

http://www.benchedman.blogspot.com/2015/06/benched-week-81-prepared-surprises.html

Saturday, June 20, 2015. Benched Week 81: prepared surprises. For all his storied skill at twist endings, William Sidney Porter (AKA O. Henry) never mastered the surprise beginning. And yet, here I was at the O. Henry Hotel in Greensboro, NC, having had only half a day’s notice to get there. The hotel itself was filled with unexpected delights, from its dark-wood lounge. To the free copy of the namesake’s book in the room. I was determined to find a surprise ending to the outing. 8221; I asked. I think w...

The Saxophone Player's Wife. My story is important not because it is mine, God knows, but because if I tell it anything like right, the chances are you will recognize that in many ways it is also yours." (Fredereck Buechner). For Better or For Worse. We went to our storage unit the other day. We had a piece of furniture a friend could use, so we cleared stuff out of the way to get to it. As we moved things out of the unit in order to get to the desired object, I got to thinking. What about the children w...

My Heart Is Full! Today, I am THANKFUL. Being able to get the last of our "collection" to the dump. This meant having the extra cash to pay for the disposal, and friends with a truck and strong muscles to do the deed. That's a lot! The people who support prison and aftercare ministry.

I began this post as a status on Facebook, but quickly realized it was more suited for my blog. I deeply hope that what I am about to share offends no one, but I am compelled to speak out. I suppose we should begin with a definition. What is "manufactured ministry? Ultimately, you c...

Here is my version of the must-have qualities for her husband, with a counterpoint just for her. These qualities are inspired by the Saxophone Player, and are listed in no particular order. 1 He must listen to you. Be sure to say something worth hearing. 2 He must keep growing.

Don't be a believer, be a follower. Friday, February 8, 2013. How can we beat our addiction? Give up control, be patient, and listen for the still small voice. In a somewhat unrelated thought, how would a new Christian know that they need to give up their life’s throne? God calls us not to convert, but to disciple, often times we forget to follow up. Monday, November 26, 2012. New International Version (NIV). The Vine and the Branches. 15 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. This summer I ...
