https://benjamingotchel.wordpress.com/2014/10/14/on-waste
Et al – Latin abbreviation. et alii. (and others.). Thrift is poetic because it is creative; waste is unpoetic because it is waste. GK Chesterton, What’s Wrong with the World. It bothers me because I want the things I do to lead me somewhere. Activities like browsing YouTube resemble treadmills you spend a lot of time going nowhere. Activities like reading and writing are like cross country runs there may be some rocks and hills along the way, but by the end you’ve arrived somewhere new. October 14, 2014.

Et al – Latin abbreviation. et alii. (and others.). You can make anything by writing. I have the privilege this fall semester of studying at Oxford University. Oxford is a magnificent and storied city admired by many. 19th century poet Matthew Arnold described it as “ the city of dreaming spires. 8221; And rightly so it has fed the imaginations of many great literary minds, such as C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien. In fact, Oxford has a rich literary history. Especially because you get to explore the storie...

Et al – Latin abbreviation. et alii. (and others.). The philosopher’s flaw. Many people are good at talking about what they are doing, but in fact do little. Others do a lot but don’t talk about it; they are the ones who make a community live. Jean Vanier, Community And Growth. This is it my last piece for the Empire State Tribune! I wrote some concluding thoughts about the difficulty of applying theory to reality. Please enjoy, and thank you for your readership! May 10, 2014. Leave a Reply Cancel reply.

Et al – Latin abbreviation. et alii. (and others.). Illustration by Abigail Jennings. This is a short story I wrote last summer. Then, voices and footsteps began to reach his ears. He sighed. The doors to the office burst open and disgorged a horde of full-stomached co-workers. Murmured conversations, squeaking chairs, and the hum of reawakened computers all melted together into a familiar buzz that permeated the room like an offensive odor. Click Click. Click…. Et al – Latin abbreviation. et alii. (and others.). Click here for my blog post on the topic. Religious texts, modern communities, and observations of the everyday all reflect the same thing: human nature ceaselessly exhibits our need for each other. In acknowledging this need, we can rediscover ourselves and how we value those who surround us. Is something I find important and profound. Is an acknowledgment of human needs. Is a reminder of dependency, of emotion, and of humanity. So, here’s to us.

Fireside Musings: June Readings
http://firesidemusings.blogspot.com/2015/06/june-readings.html
Musings on life, teaching, books, and writing. Tuesday, June 30, 2015. Corrie ten Boom: Faith Amidst Fear by Sam Wellman. Just over 200 pages, this biography was very short. I liked reading about Corrie's life, and somehow it was comforting that, of all her sisters, she struggled the most with faith, forgiveness, and trusting God during the imprisonment and concentration camps. It was a reminder that I don't need to be perfect, I need to have an obedient and determined heart. Books I did not finish:.

Musings on life, teaching, books, and writing. Tuesday, July 07, 2015. Why You Should Listen to Christmas Music this Summer. Context is usually dangerously important; without it we make wrong conclusions and decisions. Seasons offer an important context to music, but what if they also, indirectly, swallow the meaning? During the season that His incarnation often loses meaning. It might be a stretch for you, but do listen to the song. Listen, as if you've never heard the song or its message before. Please...
Fireside Musings: Selfish Bird Feeding
http://firesidemusings.blogspot.com/2015/05/selfish-bird-feeding.html
Musings on life, teaching, books, and writing. Tuesday, May 12, 2015. Earlier this Spring, I bought birdseed and filled the little bird feeder by the window. I sat there, watching the many finches and cardinals come by for a meal. They hopped and chirruped, shaking their little winds and defending their portion of the seed. I sat there a long time, taking it all in. The feeder started to look empty, and I decided I would fill it - in the morning. Goodness, I'm glad God is a better caretaker than I.

Musings on life, teaching, books, and writing. Sunday, May 31, 2015. Books that Accompanied me through May. The Problem of Pain by C. S. Lewis. Academic and philosophical. It had never before occurred to me to think half of those thoughts. Having thought through some of them, now, I feel more comfortable with C. S.'s conclusions, though they still feel beyond me. A Grief Observed by C. S. Lewis. The 5-minute Plantar Fasciitis Solution. You'll Get Through This by Max Lucado. Moody's style left me feeling ...

Fireside Musings: Shipwrecked and Cared For
http://firesidemusings.blogspot.com/2015/05/shipwrecked-and-cared-for.html
Musings on life, teaching, books, and writing. Tuesday, May 19, 2015. Shipwrecked and Cared For. Do you remember the story of Paul, traveling to Rome as a prisoner. After a long day on my feet, with my plantar fasciitis acting up, I, too, give up all hope of being saved. In the midst of it, it feels like the pain will last forever and that nothing will ever worth attempting. I lived one such day last week. See, when the storm had calmed quite a bit they ship ran aground a ways away from an island, and th...

There were many men involved in this uprising, trying to get control of their own little nation again. They murdered during this insurrection, killing heedlessly. His name was Barabbas.
