Broken Biro: August 2013
http://brokenbiro.blogspot.com/2013_08_01_archive.html
Monday, 26 August 2013. Proof, if proof be needed. So one of the important things to do when putting a collection together, or presumably any publication, is to proof it carefully. If you're anything like me (prone to a lack of attention to detail, and very easily distra. oh look, a sparrow! I just thought I'd share a couple of the things he picked up on in the first version of The Silence Museum. Untidy bottom of “previously published” paragraph. Two different styles of ellipsis on same line. What's the...

The Rise and Rise of Tim Lovejoy: Benefits Street
http://theriseandriseoftimlovejoy.blogspot.com/2014/02/benefits-street.html
Monday, 10 February 2014. If you live in the UK, you probably already know about the Channel 4 programme 'Benefits Street', a documentary series which has attracted an awful lot of attention and controversy over the past month or so. Callum is, to be polite, a problem. Over the course of the episode we see Callum demanding a bowl of cereal at midnight, not going to bed until 5am, not going to nursery because? Now Mark might not know what the capital of Andorra is, or the square root of 225, but he's not ...

Carys Bray: Growing things
http://postnatalconfession.blogspot.com/2015/06/growing-things.html
Monday, 29 June 2015. I'm in the middle of growing my second novel. I'm writing about allotments, and weeds, and sowing and reaping, which means that the time I spend at our allotment essentially counts as research. This makes me happy. I'm often asked whether A Song for Issy Bradley. I don't want to go all Donald Rumsfeld and start talking about known knowns, known unknowns and unknown unknowns, but I like to write about a combination known and unknown (to me) things. Here's some pictures of the kno...

Like Father, Like Daughter: July 2013
http://likefatherlikedaughter.blogspot.com/2013_07_01_archive.html
After almost four years, today was my last day as a stay-at-home dad. And we marked it with a day trip involving two of G's favourite activities: going swimming and eating ice cream. When we eventually got out and started walking back to where our bags were, she realised she was leaving wet footprints on the ground. So that was a game we had to play for a while. Which was fine, because we weren't in any hurry. So that's about that. Next week I'm going back to work full-time, so I'll no longer be a st...

Like Father, Like Daughter: Lego For Girls
http://likefatherlikedaughter.blogspot.com/2013/06/lego-for-girls.html
About how I've always been keen to avoid exposing G to too much pink, in the hope that she won't grow up believing she can only do certain 'girl' things. There's not an outright ban on Disney princess stuff, but it needs to be balanced by less stereotypically girly activities. I don't have many parenting rules, but in a world of needless makeovers. And colour-themed toy displays. I think this is an important one to stick to. Lego's frankly alarming girl-focused advertising campaign. Put Me In A Boat.

Like Father, Like Daughter: March 2013
http://likefatherlikedaughter.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html
It was a busy Sunday of Easter egg fun for G. We started off in our back garden, where G got down to the serious work of finding little chocolate eggs that Mrs J had hidden about the place. Not that G was in the mood for sharing them out afterwards:. We then went for an afternoon at Dunham Massey Hall near Altrincham. It's a big National Trust pile, and there was a trail laid out in the gardens for little ones to follow. Not that G was initially too sure:. On the way around, we encountered some chickens:.

Sue's Blog: Progress report
http://smjl123.blogspot.com/2011/08/progress-report.html
Thursday, 4 August 2011. It is my own fault – I got side tracked by. Mr Wroe’s Virgins. And Angela Carter’s. And I’m looking longingly at Neil Gaiman’s oeuvres that I would rather be reading. I have read three and a half books so far. I enjoyed James Kelman’s gritty Scottish. And Helen Simpson’s. Hey Yeah Right Get a Life. I struggled with Jim Crace’s. The best one so far is Tim Winton’s. I’m impressed with the reading list so far. Posted by Sue's Blog. 7 August 2011 at 08:54. Jim Crace’s Being Dea...

Carys Bray: May 2015
http://postnatalconfession.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html
Thursday, 28 May 2015. There was a brief window between finishing my PhD and getting properly stuck into the first draft of novel 2 when I had time to read and enjoy some of the proofs I had been sent. Here are some brand-spanking new books that you'll be sure to enjoy when they are published in the coming weeks. If you like suspenseful, frightening novels, you'll love Ruth Ware's In a Dark Dark Wood. The Summer of Secrets. Is an evocative and atmospheric coming-of-. Helen’s summer is set to be bor...
