길 잃은 양의 다리를 부러트리는 목자. 어지러울 련/연䜌’이라는 글자는 ‘말씀 언言’을 두고 양 옆에 ‘실 사糸’를 배치한 형태이다. ‘실 사糸’가 누에고치에서 명주실을 뽑아내는 모양이라는 것 정도는 대개 안다. 그런데 ‘어지러울 련/연䜌’을 알아듣기 위해서는 가운데 들어있는 ‘말씀 언言’을 어떻게 해석할 것인가가 관건이다. 글씨를 쓸 때에도 ‘말씀 언言’을 먼저 쓰고 왼쪽 ‘실 사糸’, 그리고 오른쪽 ‘실 사糸’를 차례로 쓴다. 또 ‘어지러울 련/연䜌’에는 ‘다스리다’라는 뜻도 있다고 하는데, 이것은 이렇게 실타래처럼 엉킨 인간사의 것들을 잘 풀어내어 다스린다는 뜻을 담지 않았을까 하고 추측해 볼 뿐이다. 아무튼, 이런 내력을 지닌 ‘어지러울 련/연䜌’이 다른 글자와 합해지면 다른 뜻을 가진 글자들이 아주 많이 생겨난다. 하면서도 못내 저 밑바닥에 그래도 남겨놓아야만 할 것 같은 미련未練(아닐 미未, 익힐 련練)이 사람을 어지럽힌다. 붓 필筆’이 들어간 낱말들은 많다. ‘잡을 집’을 더하면...

The Excess', a trio, will take to the road this year with a new set of songs from Benji, the other members being Pete Flood (Bellowhead) on drums and Pete Thomas (Jackie Oates/Megan Henwood) on bass. A plan in gestation for some time, it is now being realised! Benji is at the forefront of the UK folk and roots scene, be it making a racket with now defunct big band folk pioneers.
