Water voles are often thought of as lowland mammals, but it is now known that they can inhabit upland landscapes so long as there are lengths of slow flowing stream with reasonably dense vegetation alongside it. They can do well here thanks to the absence of intensive habitat management and introduced mink, the main threats to this endangered rodent elsewhere. Wednesday, 2 November 2011.
