I started photographing seriously while in Paris from 1954 to 1956. My wife, Barbara, and I lived in the Pension Vincent on Boulevard Port Royal. Barbara was studying at the Sorbonne and I was in the U.S. Army, a private working at SHAPE (Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe) as a draftsman. SHAPE, 1954 Pension Vincent, 1954. During the academic year 1976-77, Barbara served as the director of the University of Illinois Year Abroad Program in Paris. I took a leave of absence from Northwestern University and spent the year roaming Paris with my camera. One project involved finding and photographing views of Paris that appeared in a collection of 19th and 20th century paintings exhibited at the Musée Carnavalet.
