Sunday, 20 October 2013. Determine the actual guide number of a flash unit, given that Guide Number = f-stop x distance. In studio I fired my Canon 430EX II using a light meter 1 meter away. With the flash head zoomed to 50mm, the correct aperture as given by the light meter was f/32. Given f-stop * distance would equal f/32 * 1 meter, we have a guide number of 32 .
