Sakala serves as Cite Soleil’s only youth community center, to develop children and young adults through athletics, agronomy, and education. Founded as a Pax Christi peacebuilding project, Sakala builds people of courage and character, to strengthen the families and communities of Cite Soleil. Our results in serving the people of Cite Soleil:. SAKALA After School Program. 100 beneficiaries (school supplies: 250 beneficiaries). 25 girls ages 6-10 years. 100 children @ 2 hrs per week. 250 youth @ 11 months.

The idea of SAKALA came from the situation of growing violence in Cite Soleil after the overthrow of President Jean-Bertrande Aristide in 2004. Many rival armed groups from Cite Soleil’s 34 neighborhoods fought in continual violence, giving rise to the characterization of Cite Soleil as an outlaw zone.
