Bear With Me | Traveling
https://bethanygrace.wordpress.com/2015/02/11/bear-with-me
Thoughts along the way. Boys Each week someone leads in prayer in a different language, and this week our food, and our lives, are blessed in Danish. Regardless, it has been an appropriate time to consider the ways we bear one another’s burdens. I listen recently to this message. I’m grateful for these many blessings of life in Kenya as they come at unexpected times, through surprising people, and sometimes even in Danish. From → Uncategorized. Larr; Radiant Light. Within the darkness, all is being changed | Traveling
https://bethanygrace.wordpress.com/2015/03/01/within-the-darkness-all-is-being-changed
Thoughts along the way. Within the darkness, all is being changed. By expenditure of hope,/Intelligence, and work, /You think you have it fixed. /It is unfixed by rule./ Within the darkness, all/ Is being changed, and you/ Also will be changed. Wendell Berry, A Timbered Choir. The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied; those who seek him shall praise the Lord! Psalm 22: 26,27,30,31. The Psalm verse Jesus had yelled out was of course the opening of Psalm 22: ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? PS: R...

Packing up | Traveling
https://bethanygrace.wordpress.com/2014/12/01/packing-up
Thoughts along the way. Sometimes, I feel like I spend half my life either packing or unpacking. You’d think my packing skills would improve with practice, but no. I’ve realized that the unexpected situations I’ve often found myself in (lost luggage! Cultures requiring head coverings! Means I now feels as though I must pack for every eventuality. And, there must always be enough snacks to share with any hungry or stressed person i might encounter. So, packing is not something I take lightly. Ahead, but l...
Radiant Light | Traveling
https://bethanygrace.wordpress.com/2014/12/22/radiant-light
Thoughts along the way. The moon sets and the eastern sky lightens, the hem of night pulling away, taking stars with it one by one until only two are left. Anthony Doerr, All the Light We Cannot See. Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son. Whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God. I love all of the rhythms of Christmas: reconnec...

waiting with joy? | faith, hope and wanderlust
https://faithhopeandwanderlust.wordpress.com/2015/05/29/waiting-with-joy
Faith, hope and wanderlust. May 29, 2015. A big, shiny gold sign hangs on my wall that says JOY. It was there when I arrived in Kenya nearly 6 months ago. Sometimes I glance at it peacefully and contemplatively, thanking God for the many blessings he’s given me. Often I barely notice it’s presence, even though it’s next to my front door, at eye level, in one foot tall letters. Dinner date with Janelle, one of the students at RVA that brightens my days. Nate’s dog Mondu, my running buddy. I really wanted ...
I Know My Guide: Being A Misfit
http://iknowmyguide.blogspot.com/2014/07/being-misfit.html
Monday, July 14, 2014. A few weeks ago I had to get fitted for a respirator for my new job. At the doctor's office I had the following conversation with a nurse. Nurse: What is your race? Me: What are the options? Nurse: African American, Mexican American, and Caucasian. Me: None of those apply. Nurse: So what is your race? Me: I usually choose Latina or Hispanic. Is "other" an option? Me: Can you leave it blank? Nurse No, it is required to continue with the test. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).
I Know My Guide: Traveling Beyond Mundri
http://iknowmyguide.blogspot.com/2011/11/traveling-beyond-mundri.html
Monday, November 14, 2011. Over the last few weeks we have ventured outside of the greater Mundri area to learn and see how God is at work in South Sudan. Rainy season is ending so the roads are drying out, but I was still VERY thankful for our tan Land Cruiser, the winch, and low 4-wheel drive. Our first trip was to Garia which is about 30 miles outside of Mundri town. It took us a little over two hours to reach this rural community. We sat in a circle and went through the introductions, we prayed, and ...

Raising Flags: The Start of Something Good
http://jennifer-raisingflags.blogspot.com/2014/09/the-start-of-something-good.html
Saturday, September 6, 2014. The Start of Something Good. Should I use everyday as a preaching opportunity? Is my relationship with my students most important? Can I push my students to think outside their Christian school bubble? Is it possible to even do any of these things successfully, while still trying to maintain healthy relationships outside of work? I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. An eighth grade dance photo, for perspective. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). This blog w...

Word and Deed: Rural Burundian Cuisine
http://mccropders.blogspot.com/2015/06/rural-burundian-cuisine.html
How We Got Here. Burundi has been called the hungriest nation on earth. Studies by the IFPRI in 2013 and 2014 determined the GHI (Global Hunger Index) for 120 countries, and Burundi scored the most hungry. One study concluded that 73% of the population of Burundi is undernourished. So what do people in rural Burundi eat? These days, as prices for imported and packaged goods are rising. This spring we took a field trip to see how a Burundian friend prepares her meals. This is what we learned. Jason and He...

Traveling | Thoughts along the way
Thoughts along the way. It’s almost Easter, and as Lent draws to a close, I’m thinking about ashes and dust, about life and death, about resurrection, about the color green. And so, appropriately, the air of lenten Mundri was filled with ashes and dust. We’d have meetings outside, and I’d find that ashes had landed in my hair. Whenever I biked anywhere, my face and even teeth would be tinted orange from the dusty road. Dusting my desk was an exercise in futility. By Paul Kalanithi. Have you read them?

December 9, 2012. Old Journal Entries I Recently Stumbled Upon (2009)…. Scattered thoughts and empty words fill my mind as I try to fill this page with words for you. But nothing comes. The desire burns inside of me to write something beautiful, gut-stirring, thought provoking and inspiring for you. Something that’ll make you give me *Snap *Snap *Snaps and some “Mmm that’s good”. But nothing comes. So I decided to write a letter. 8220;hmm, looks pretty short to me…” I replied. I hesitated and looked arou...
Bethany Grace Martin | a daybook
31 Days: Between You and Me. March 12, 2015. By Bethany Grace Martin. Lessons from Aisle 9. I used to exhale stress fumes in the grocery check-out line every Thursday morning. After swiping my credit card I would vow this would be the last visit to the store with my children. But I always found myself deep-breathing in the check-out line the following week, kicking myself for thinking I could pull it off this time with Houdini in my shopping cart. 8220;It’s in the small moments that life is truly l...
