Sharing the life of a Vintage Button seller. June 25, 2015. Bakelite buttons, and in fact any object made of Bakelite are collectable because Bakelite was the first man made plastic. Well almost! Celluloid was the first man made plastic invented almost 50 years before Bakelite, but it wasn’t completely synthetic. My eldest daughter; Betsy, holds mops (mother of pearl abbreviation commonly used) to her cheek to identify if they are true mops or not, she is always pleased when she is correct! The iridescence of mop buttons is beautiful, if you turn them in the light, it truly shows the beauty of nature at it’s best. June 22, 2015 at 12:47 pm.

As a lot of my stock comes from house clearances, as well as lots of buttons and haberdashery I also get more random, interesting items too that I often find at the bottom of a sewing box, button tin, or in a little trinket box. Dolls heads and fabric faces, I find every now and then from a lady who must have made the odd doll or two, but on a couple of occasions I have found some ‘frozen charlottes.’.
