Mount Bate was named in 1862 by Captain George Henry Richards of the Royal Navy. Richards was at first in-charge of the surveying vessel HMS Plumper. And then the HMS Hecate. Not directly surrounding the sanctuary but guarding the entrance at the mouth of Perry Creek is Malaspina Peak. A Presumed First Ascent' written for the Island Bushwhacker.

From the Minister of Mines and Petroleum Resources Annual report ending December 31, 1949:. It is reported to consist of eighteen Crown-granted claims that include Lots 1568 to 1584, inclusive, and Lot 1813. Most of these claims were located between 1933 and 1937, but Lot 1813 was located in 1940. Today the area has been extensively logged .
