Beyond our Backdoor

Thursday, August 13, 2015. I have been thinking this week a lot about faith. Faith is still in many ways to me a mystery, but God is revealing to me slowly, and sometimes painfully, what it means to live a life of faith. Our family has decided to move forward with plans to return to Burundi "long-term", (eg. a 5 year commitment). What does that mean? Why is this such a struggle for me? I am starting to understand that struggle (of any sort) give us the opportunity to surrender to God. And I believe i...

Beyond our Backdoor: May 2015

http://beyondourbackdoor.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html

Wednesday, May 27, 2015. After Switzerland, we took the train to Paris, where we spent the last 3 days (as planned), and did all the things you are supposed to do in Paris (Eiffel tower, Notre Dame, Louvre, etc). Touring Paris with a 6 year old also means you are touring the bathrooms of Paris, which were lovely. So, this afternoon we took the train back to Brussels where we are scheduled to fly out tomorrow morning. Back home. Back to reality, as we know it. Burj Khalifa, Dubai. Saturday, May 23, 2015.

Beyond our Backdoor: November 2014

http://beyondourbackdoor.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html

Friday, November 21, 2014. Sunday, November 16, 2014. We gave some money to the parents for food and transportation back to Kibuye. And we prayed with them. I found out today, that the child did eventually receive her bronchoscopy and they did retrieve at least part of the bean. They are taking her back for another bronchoscopy tomorrow. Wednesday, November 12, 2014. A Strange Thing’s Been Happening. I was pretty much giddy with joy over a cold shower. When I expect things, like lights to turn on, I get ...

Beyond our Backdoor: March 2015

Monday, March 23, 2015. Walking With The Poor. 8220;Poverty is about relationships that don’t work, that isolate, than abandon, or devalue. Transformation must be about restoring relationships, just and right relationships with God, with self, with community, with the ‘other’ and with the environment.”. One topic that has become of great interest to me since coming to Burundi is that of transformational development. Saturday, March 21, 2015. A Boy and His Bird. It has been fun to see Biniyam take on the ...

Beyond our Backdoor: In the beginning

http://beyondourbackdoor.blogspot.com/2015/07/in-beginning.html

Tuesday, July 21, 2015. Blog post for Genesis 1:1-2. 8220;In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.”. How often do I meditate on God as creator of heaven and earth? How often do I ponder the enormous implications of these first words of scripture? How often do I thank God for creating man in His own image? These first words in Genesis spoken to us...

Beyond our Backdoor: Time To Go

http://beyondourbackdoor.blogspot.com/2015/05/time-to-go.html

Saturday, May 16, 2015. Well, how can I sum up the past few weeks in Burundi in a single blog post. Not easy. Although we have tried to remain somewhat silent about all that is going on, it seems that Burundi has finally made the national news this past week, so I thought I would update anyone reading this. Blog about where things stand right now. I pray and I make jokes. Canadian refugees. They can look so pathetic sometimes. I think I saw that guy at our local Bellingham Costco. Ella's African Adventures : Ethiopia

http://ellasafricanadventures.blogspot.com/2015/02/ethiopia.html

Friday, February 20, 2015. For spring break we came to Ethiopia and we are visiting our friends, Burtukan and Nesibu, who run Yezelalem Minch. The flight went well and I didn't get sick, we stoped in Kigali, Rwanda to pick up more people and I got to see the country side. Ethiopian time is one hour ahead of Burundian time so we are adjusting good here. We drove home and had a relaxing evening at Morning Coffee Guesthouse. Ella's African Adventures : October 2014

http://ellasafricanadventures.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html

Friday, October 31, 2014. The other day we went to our house helper Amoni's house, it was about a half an hour walk and it had just rained so it was pretty muddy, by the time we got back my feet were really hurting from my boots rubbing against my heels. All of the houses are made of brick and some have banana trees surrounding them, a lot of people have chickens, cows, and sometimes goats. They gave us fanta, which is a treat, and bread rolls with honey inside them. Here are some pictures:. We have been...

Ella's African Adventures : Ibitaro, the hospital

http://ellasafricanadventures.blogspot.com/2015/05/ibitaro-hospital.html

Saturday, May 9, 2015. Ibitaro, the hospital. Sometimes it is very fun or useful to live 5 minutes from a hospital, you get to go hold the new babies, see a boy getting a coin fished out of his throat, visit the children, and when my mom got a hairy caterpillar spick in her eye she just walked over to the neighbors house and our friendly eye doctor walked her to the hospital and fixed her right up. Ella's African Adventures : Chick update

http://ellasafricanadventures.blogspot.com/2015/03/chick-update.html

Saturday, March 14, 2015. As we have learned, chicks are very hard work. After Hazel's death we watched the chicks very closely so they wouldn't get picked off by crows or hawks but they still managed to somehow disappear in other ways. While we were in Ethiopia Amber caught the first case of chickalaria ( chick malaria), as we call it, and was found lifeless the next morning. Boo wast taken away, while Anna was watching, by what she said was a hideous crow. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Saturday, February 21, 2015. Today we went to the Yezelalem Minch offices and met our sponcer child, Redit, and our grandparents sponsor child, Yabsira, we gave them some gifts and got to ask them a few questions about school and sports. Then we went to the feeding program, run by Burtukan and Nesibu, and helped give the food out to the kids. They had injera, the Ethiopian bread, with a sauce and bananas. All the kids were very nice and we even met another Mekdes. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Ella's African Adventures : March 2015

http://ellasafricanadventures.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html

Monday, March 30, 2015. Our mission agency is having a retreat in Kenya this week and we decided to come a few days early to go on safari. When we flew into Nairobi we spent the night in a guesthouse and then yesterday morning we drove to a very small airport that is just for flying to safari and a few beaches. We took a very small plane on a 45 minute flight to the Masai Mara. We landed in a dry field where our guide was waiting with a jeep. After a little more driving we came across a tower(group) of g...

Does it do something? Or does it actually do nothing? Making the most of the learning process. My bucket list on my last birthday looked like this. Conquer the tall mountains. Ride the bike long distances. Learn to cook all mom’s favorite dishes. Learn to play a musical instrument. Learn a new language. Read all the classics. Watch all the classics. Grow my own veggies. Run a full marathon. Know all there is to know of history. Write my blog more often ;). And soo many more! But is all this even possible?

Looking into the mind and space from a 7th grader's perspective. The Motion of Motion. March 13, 2012. Motion is one of the most interesting topics ever. Motion is the movement of an object. I mean, that’s pretty obvious. But how does motion work? March 13, 2012. Sorry about the delaying post. I am just not finding the time or, I guess, energy to keep up with my blog. I will keep up now though, soooo…. Matter- What is it? February 8, 2012. Go to their blog! I am not sure if the mass of the volume of the ...
