Shashank in Africa: English 101 with the Eagles
http://shashankinafrica.blogspot.com/2007/04/english-101-with-eagles_6245.html
Friday, April 20, 2007. English 101 with the Eagles. This morning Omar, the irrepressible office manager, came into my room with an urgent request. "I hear you speak a little English," Omar said. (This is a classic Omar joke.) "What does this word mean? He showed me a notepad where he'd written "colitas." I'd never heard the word before. I knew that colitis was an intestinal disease, but I figured/hoped that's not what he came to ask. On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair. Night Ranger trawls KC.

Shashank in Africa: A rock star and a hard place
http://shashankinafrica.blogspot.com/2007/05/rock-star-and-hard-place.html
Wednesday, May 30, 2007. A rock star and a hard place. Jeffrey Sachs, author of The End of Poverty. And development economist to the stars (Bono wrote the foreword to his bestselling book and Angelina Jolie co-starred with him. In an MTV documentary on Africa), spoke last night in Nairobi to the foreign correspondents association. For not giving enough humanitarian aid, especially to Africa. He has calculated the amount of aid to Africa as $16 per poor person per year, over the last 60 years. When the Un...

Horners' Odyssey: October 2006
http://h0rner.blogspot.com/2006_10_01_archive.html
Tuesday, October 31, 2006. Top 5 Impressions of New Orleans (B):. 1) European: Colonial architecture (French and Spanish); Bourbon Street (= Soho Ibiza); less uptight and earnest than New England (afterall, it is the Big Easy ). It's made us miss home. 2) Suffering: many shops were shut or closing down (we saw the sign in one saying another Katrina victim ), restaurants were empty, and tours not running. 3) Hot: A has loved her evening dips in the hotel’s outdoor hot-tub. Horners' Odyssey: July 2007
http://h0rner.blogspot.com/2007_07_01_archive.html
Saturday, July 28, 2007. We were supposed to go to the annual Massachusetts General Hospital clambake today. A clambake is a New England tradition, involving cooking clams, mussels, lobsters etc., in one big pile on an open fire. Last year, S was in England. but B went, and ate FOUR lobsters. Anyway, we had just arrived at the event when the heavens opened - a real Boston downpour, with torrential rain, thunder, lightening etc. Posted by BS&A at 3:22 PM. Links to this post. And Mummy a small heart attack.

Horners' Odyssey: March 2007
http://h0rner.blogspot.com/2007_03_01_archive.html
Thursday, March 29, 2007. Having stocked up on British essentials (Cadbury's chocolate, Twinings tea-bags, large jar Branston pickle, and M&S baby-grows) during our last day in the UK, we spent our last evening with B's family in Oxford. Our new baby nephew/niece is due in a week. We had secretly hoped the new baby might arrive during our visit, but s/he evidently had other plans. Anyway it was quite a special evening. We then returned to Andrew's (B's best man) and his new wife Bernadette's place. I'm s...

Horners' Odyssey: January 2007
http://h0rner.blogspot.com/2007_01_01_archive.html
Monday, January 29, 2007. Or, for Americans who read this blog: saran-wrap diaper. A had to visit the paediatrician today, as her poor little tummy has not completely returned to normal since we all got that stomach virus over Christmas. She was weighed and had her temperature taken, and deemed to be healthy, but S was instructed to switch her to soy-based formula, and put her on the 'BRAT' diet for a week (bananas, rice, apple sauce, toast). Seems to S this is definitely a job for a doctor. So we were OK.

Horners' Odyssey: November 2006
http://h0rner.blogspot.com/2006_11_01_archive.html
Thursday, November 30, 2006. Yesterday, the E! Channel showed a completely serious programme, entitled 'The Fabulous Life of Londoners'. To put this in context, other programmes include: 'The Fabulous Life of Hip-Hop Stars' and 'The Fabulous Life of your Favourite Celebrities'. That is one really great thing about being a Brit in America. You can be as White 'n' Nerdy as you like, but they all seem to think you are indisputably cool. Posted by BS&A at 7:55 PM. Shashank in Africa: February 2006
http://shashankinafrica.blogspot.com/2006_02_01_archive.html
Wednesday, February 22, 2006. Good advice from Nigeria. Posted by Shashank @ 8:34 AM. On my current trip to Uganda, however, I'm starting to think that my love is unrequited. Being brown-skinned in Uganda, you take on a complicated history - Indians were expelled by the dictator Idi Amin in the 1970s, but they've returned with a vengeance and now control a greater share of the country's economy than they do in Kenya or Tanzania. Not everyone is happy about this. Posted by Shashank @ 1:00 AM. Meanwhile, b...

Shashank in Africa: May 2006
http://shashankinafrica.blogspot.com/2006_05_01_archive.html
Friday, May 19, 2006. A reader has written in, apparently in response to my most recent article. Maybe I've been out of the U.S. too long, but I didn't understand this. I think this reader has a good point in here somewhere and I'd like to know what it is. A little help? Original Message - - -. Friday, May 19, 2006 6:36 PM. You talk about white people who have it all. They talk about the white man in america who have it all. Why is it right for people think that only black people are the people of african.
