Field and Lab Research. Research is the most important part of all aspects of paleontology, from learning about a dig’s geologic characteristics, to the final preparation, description and reporting of a fossil. Research on the osteology (study of the bones and structure of the vertebrate) helps us to identify different parts of the skeleton during excavation and preparation. Knowing what the bone is and how it is shaped helps us reduce the accidental marring of bones. Once we get a skeleton out of the gr...

Institute preparators use a variety of tools in preparation. Much of the work is still done manually using chisels, hammers, X-acto. Knives, and scribes along with various types. And sizes of brushes and small hand tools. However, most of the fine detail work of removing the matrix from the fossil is done with the use of air scribes and air abrasive units. The Institute has been using Comco. 153; adhesives) and PVA. Polyvinyl acetate) for this purpose. After nearly 25 years of use, the Institute is c...

Paleontology with The Houston Museum of Natural Science. Sunday, November 11, 2007. Day 7: 10 OMGs. Dr Bakker has an impulsive, informal response to most paleontological finds. If you've got something cool - like a tooth in perfect condition, he'll exclaim, "Oh my God, look at this." If it's really cool - like a razor-sharp claw he's never seem before, it's "Oh my God, Oh my God, what is this? Before today was out, we had a 10 OMG discovery. But first. This morning, Dr. Bakker. That came out yesterday.
