The main dangers on the roads of Bhutan, apart from dangers due to your own cycling abilities and preparations (material failures, breakdowns, exhaustion and hypothermia) differ from the four S'es of the tropical holiday beaches. These are the four dangerous D's of Bhutan roads for cyclists:. Dirt: dust, sand, gravel, oil and cattle shit can be encountered about anywhere on the roads, especially in curves on downhill stretches;. And then there are also the four or six P's:.

Rules of the road. Wearing a safety belt is not required for drivers and passengers of cars, and neither are helmets for cyclists. However, better be safe than sorry. A dashed white line in the middle of the road is meant to guide Bhutanese drivers at night, and Tata trucks all the time. Do not make the mistake to think that the piece of road to the left of this line is yours. A continuous white line in the middle of the road is the same as above for stretches where visibility may at times be poor.

Biking the trails and tracks. This is where it gets interesting for the more serious mountain bikers. If you are only a half-hearted mountain biker avoid Bhutan or stay on the main roads. The tracks are often steep, narrow, rocky, rooty, muddy or extreme washboard caused by cattle or yak. Even on the best loops you will end up walking part of it, unless you can jump over fallen tree trunks with your bike. Thimphu-Talakha Gonpa-Simtokha Dzong loop. Chuzomsa-Pelela-Gangtey-Phubjikha (mostly tarmac road).
