Biblical Foundations of Literature Blog(redux)

Biblical Foundations of Literature Blog(redux). Tuesday, December 05, 2006. The end, as it were, is near. As this is the case, I thought I'd say a few things by way of wrapping up. My style for once will be economical as opposed to rambling. I enjoyed this course immensely. I've now read a larger portion of the Bible then I ever have(up to Ezra in the Old Testament, and Romans in the New Testament), and may even mangage to read it all at some point. I'm glad to haave read. Posted by Kari Bowles @ 1:26 PM.

http://www.biblicalforbowles.blogspot.com/2006/10/i-read-book-of-job-yesterday-but-found.html

Biblical Foundations of Literature Blog(redux). Tuesday, October 24, 2006. I read the book of Job yesterday, but found out that we will be doing it and Ecclesiastes on Thursday. I also awoke to the understanding- which I can't really believe I didn't find out specifically while reading. That the Talmud is comprised of the Mishna and the Gemara. There's a bit less perplexion(sp? Is that even an actual word? On my part now. I also think that I may want to read Singer's short story. View my complete profile.

Biblical Foundations of Literature Blog(redux). Thursday, October 26, 2006. The Book of Ecclesiastes is one of the few instances in the Bible where we encounter epicureanism, which essentially boils down to this:Eat, drink and be merry for tommorrow you die. "Vanity of vanities! This phrase is the book's motto, but through it we can also see an example of how it was dealt a hard hand in translation. The word in Hebrew,. What's a life anyway? We're born, we live a little while, we die.". We recieved speci...

Biblical Foundations of Literature Blog(redux). Thursday, November 09, 2006. A Greek word for time which doesn't mean time in the sense of the little hands on the clock- that word is. But in the sense of the decisive moment in time that obliterates time. The eschatalogical moment in time is always now, to quote the great theologian mentioned in class who's name I was unable to catch. Posted by Kari Bowles @ 1:13 PM. View my complete profile. It is difficult to locate in Western literature and history a more charismatic figure than David."- Harold Bloom, The Book of J (pg 41). Interestingly, throughout the book of Genesis, the theme of the second-born being preferred to the first-born crops up again and again. Cain kills his younger brother; why?

Wednesday, December 06, 2006. First of - all the presentations have been really interesting to listen to. But Marlow's on the book of Revelation (with a connection to The Invisible Man. Which I would have been interested in hearing since I've read the book) and the number 666 was very intriguing. However, would a Christian, after so many of the books of the NT talk about "turning the other cheek" and doing good to your neighbor, write an angry book placing the ruler as the antigonist? That's so strange t...

Thursday, September 28, 2006. Dinah and The Red Tent. Today in class we touched briefly (I would have liked a longer discussion) on Dinah and her supposed rape. Did she get raped or was the writer of this particular story conflicted? Dr Sexson talked about how it sounds like there are two different writers of this story - one writer favors Hamar and his love for Dinah whereas the other writer views him as violent, defiler of Jacob's beautiful daughter. Why am I so interested in this story? Yet Dr. Se...

Bad things happen to good people. Hamlet vs Polonius ( To be or not to be? Vs To thine own self be true. Are we ever satisfied? Eat, drink, and be merry for tomorrow we die)*. A good friend sent this to me. It reminded me, of course, of the "Biblical Humor" time we had in class the other day. Monday, November 20, 2006. Innocently bathing on a roof. The king sees me, wants me I can tell. There's a spark from his eyes, a fire burns. Then a fire fulfilled and what can I do? My husband is away at war. And everyone knows women cannot get pregnant. Tricks and schemes follow. My self-appointed lover stalks my husband. Dies in battle, but I believe the king. There's something more involving the king. After my mourning, the king brought me to him. And I was made his wife. My womb never my own. How can...

Biblical Footprints | connecting one footprint to another

Connecting one footprint to another. These Words are Ancient — as is the charge they carry. Asymp; Leave a comment. This is fitting, as the words that may be spoken and the stories that might be told have great power the power to shape and mold, raise up and tear down, create and destroy. These words have turned young shepherd boys into mighty men, and have made proud kings kneel in submission. Even if it doesn’t always look like it. The Israelites failed to do these things, for a generation grew up that...
