Bibliophiles In My Library: Kings of Persia
http://bibliophilesinmylibrary.blogspot.com/2009/08/kings-of-persia.html
Bibliophiles In My Library. Tuesday, August 11, 2009. Reading about Anne Fadiman catching butterflies in her essay, "Collecting Nature," reminded me of a short Trivia piece that Logan Pearsall Smith wrote, comparing writing to collecting butterflies. I have the manuscript copy of that piece, "Kings of Persia.". The book containing Smith's piece, he left us this greeting:. What funny clothes you wear, dear Readers! You have to love a writer who greets future readers! And in All Trivia,. My kind of people!
Bibliophiles In My Library: From Whence They Came: Don Brady And His Miniature Books
http://bibliophilesinmylibrary.blogspot.com/2013/04/from-whence-they-came-don-brady-and-his.html
Bibliophiles In My Library. Tuesday, April 30, 2013. From Whence They Came: Don Brady And His Miniature Books. Don Brady (1926–2006) is one of the bibliophiles in my library. He was one of the bookies who, for many years, met for breakfast in New Port Richey, Florida on Friday mornings. My wife called them "bookies" because they all had something to do with books. Don was a printer and a bookbinder. We have nearly all of the Clearview Press miniature books he printed and bound:. Blog post this month.
Bibliophiles In My Library: Mary Hyde And The Unending Pursuit
http://bibliophilesinmylibrary.blogspot.com/2008/11/mary-hyde-and-unending-pursuit.html
Bibliophiles In My Library. Thursday, November 6, 2008. Mary Hyde And The Unending Pursuit. In February, 2006 I presented this talk on Mary Hyde before the Florida Bibliophile Society. Mary Hyde And The Unending Pursuit. Mary Hyde is one of the bibliophiles in my library. I have many of the books and essays she wrote, and some of the books she formerly owned. Who is Mary Hyde? Article,"Me and James Joyce.". I must concede, however, that as a woman I am in a distinct minority in the book world. I can ...

Bibliophiles In My Library. Tuesday, April 21, 2009. Birrell, Starrett, Morley, But Who is O.M? Christopher Morley Jr.'s Autograph. OM's Note. But Who Is O.M? I thought O.M was one of the owners of a bookstore in New York. But Steven Rothman, Editor of the Baker Street Journal, provided the answer:. Just found this at Argus Bkshop Chicago and felt we should have it - may be eventually for New Suffolk -. Front Side of O.M.'s Note: Advertisement for W. Somerset Maugham Lecture. By the Rev. My Sentimental Library: Whose Hands Were On This Book?
http://blog.mysentimentallibrary.com/2015/04/whose-hands-were-on-this-book.html
Friday, April 3, 2015. Whose Hands Were On This Book? This blog post is an online version of a presentation I gave before the Florida Bibliophile Society on Sunday, March 29th, 2015. Lee Harrer, a founding member of the Florida Bibliophile Society, and a member of the Caxton Club of Chicago as well, introduced me. At a meeting of the Florida Bibliophile Society back in 2004, Lee Harrer gave me a copy of the Caxtonian. Whose Hands Were On This Book? That I bought in Hey-on-Wye in 1988. It would take more ...

Monday, September 22, 2014. The Last Book Sale Care Package. In June 2011, I visited one of the wonders of the book world: Larry McMurtry's legendary town of books, Archer City, Texas. With 350,000 books in the town, "Booked Up" was a suitable name for the bookstore. I never made it back to Archer City. In August 2012, Addison and Sarova auctioned off the majority of the McMurtry stock in a sale that Mr. McMurtry himself dubbed "The Last Book Sale.". Kurt and Douglas put some serious thought and effort a...

Monday, June 29, 2015. The booklover is distinguished from the reader as such by loving his books, and from the collector as such by reading them. The Booklover And His Books. The Saucony Book Shop. The Lessing J. Rosenwald Collection : A Catalog of the Gifts of Lessing J. Rosenwald to the Library of Congress, 1943 to 1975. Washington: Library of Congress, 1977. Wednesday, January 28, 2015. Tidbits From My Books. Books about publishers are usually among the most unrewarding parts of literature. Sometimes these volumes are products of retired editors far sunk in gentlemanly anecdotage. Sometimes such a book is a piece of self-glorification issued at a centenary of a famous house, perfect in typography and empty of critical content. Professor Howard Mumford Jones. New York Times Book Review, Oct 27, 1946. A Edward Newton, Rosenbach Fellow in Bibliography for 1936.

Thursday, August 13, 2015. About a Book and Its Owners. Every book has its own story. And many a story has yet to be told. I'm not talking about the story that is printed on the pages of a book. I'm talking about the story of the book itself. Who bought it? Where did it go afterwards? And how did it end up in my library? Jerry Morris, August 2015. The Westminster Review, Volume 136, July-December 1891. Here's a map from the book of the mouth of the Hudson River, as it was in 1776:. Jan Clark, from Michig...

Monday, November 24, 2014. The Elements of Style. If there's a book you really want to read but it hasn't been written yet, then you must write it. Did you know that. One of the best little books on writing has one of the worst bibliographic records? I am referring to the pre-1959 editions of The Elements of Style. By William Strunk, Jr. Pre-1959 Editions in My Elements of Style Collection. Top row: 1921 (four copies) 1919 (one copy). Bottom row: 1934 (three copies) 1936 (one copy) c1940s (two copies).

Tuesday, May 26, 2015. I noticed Nigel Beale's Facebook post on March 25th. And I had to smile. Because March 25th was my wife's birthday. In our forty-six years of marriage, I usually find something I "have to buy" for myself on or before my wife's birthday. And there is usually something my wife "has to buy" for herself on or before my birthday. This year was no different. There was one item I had to buy during IOBA bookseller Stephen Johnson's Flash Sale. But it wasn't a book:. Since I now had an auto...

Wednesday, February 18, 2015. Other People's Collected Letters. In my library, there is a library table in the design of a book. And on this library table are two rows —and counting—of books of other people's collected letters: from Charles Lamb's letters on the far left, to Michelangelo's letters on the far right. And on my library shelves, in my Mary Hyde collection, are still more volumes of other people's collected letters—books which once stood tall on the bookshelves of the Four Oaks Library:.

Tuesday, October 3, 2017. The All Souls Trilogy by Deborah Harkness. To read these books so I would have someone to talk to about them! A friend gushed in a phone call. "They are so good. I hadn't read anything in a while and was eager to get back into the habit, and I'd gotten a few recommendations for this series already, so I decided to give it a go and borrowed A Discovery of Witches from the library. Tuesday, April 21, 2015. Looking for new clients. Since quite a few of my regular clients have moved on to traditional publishers, it seems they don't need me anymore. Which opens up a bit of room in my editing calendar. If you're writing (or have written) a book then you really need an editor. Seriously. No author should edit their own work. Authors tend to read what they meant to write instead of what they actually wrote. Send an email to bibliophile@lifeisbetterwithbooks. Sunday, January 4, 2015.

Saturday, June 30, 2007. WellI played around with Flickr. There are so many outstanding photos on the site. The library photos that I like the best are in the Library Artworks group and the Library of Congress group. I also liked the Libraries From Around the World group and the Carnegie Libraries group. After we spent the full day hiking the trail we were very sore and bought T-shirts that said "I survived the Red Trail at Bushkill Falls.". Monday, June 18, 2007. Bibliophiles In My Library. Tuesday, February 28, 2017. The Idiosyncrasies of a C. S. Forester Collector. When my wife goes to her Weight Watchers meeting on Tuesday mornings, I go to MacDonald's for a cup of coffee and a yogurt parfait. Then I usually visit the Sheriffs Youth Ranch Thrift Store on US19 in New Port Richey, Fl. and check out the book section. Several weeks ago, I bought these three books for a buck apiece:. I cannot live without a good book -Thomas Jefferson. July 2, 2010. By Diana Wynne Jones. Star Rating: 8 stars. I went into it knowing nothing, only that it was a DWJ and I'd heard it mentioned many times as a favorite. I was confused for awhile about the Tam Lin quotes at the beginning of every chapter, though. I was about 1/3 through the book before it hit me. Tam Lin. Tom Lynn. I felt really slow.
