We hiked to Maple Canyon, walked into Santa Elena, went over to Boquillas Canyon and the Hot Springs, and never went any further west on 170 than Long Draw Pizza. My favorite thing about Hwy 118 is that I can stand smack dab in the middle of it for long periods of time without having to worry about traffic running me down. If you've ever seen this skyline you'll never forget it.
