Week 4 - Villa la Angostura to disaster - somehow I had all that time in Puerto Montt and didn't manage to actually get up to date on my blog - now Dave and I are on the ferry between PM and Chaiten - among other places as this is being written (right now it's day 36, a rain-day in La Junta on the Carreterra Australe - at least I completed this week). The Calderons standing on my campsite - day 183. Another fine campsite (183-184). Nice evening gravel heading out of Ayacucho. Morning camp - one of these cactii kept scaring me at night - day 186. Start of last big gravel section to Huancayo. Colonial bridge in Izuchaca - day 187. Same bridge - complete with donkey. Bus accident on the way out of town.

Tuesday, 22 June 2010. How's this for lack of joined-up thinking: this week is national bike week in the UK, with all sorts of events organised all over the UK. At St Paul's in London there's free breakfast and coffee being laid on for cyclists, for example. As soon as the road improvement scheme started, there was an almost immediate visible increase in the number of cyclists. This is easily explained as cycling, or sometimes even walking, from Plymstock to the city centre is far quicker than driving.
