April 1, 2004. Dad called at 5:20pm EST. Dad and Ruth started the quick jaunt to the Springer Mountain Terminus via the Forest Service Roads. At about 7am. Pictures of them at the summit of Springer Mountain are en route, we'll post them when we get 'em. They trekked back to the service road, retrieved their packs and gear from the car, bade farewell to Jim and Jeanne, and started their Northbound journey by about 9am. They reached their target shelter. He guessed about 2 miles short of the next shelter.

March 28, 2004. There and back again. Dad left here at 8am yesterday, and reached Brewer, ME,. At 2:30pm. He and Ruth left there at 3:30pm and arrived back here (Poughkeepsie, NY) at 10:00pm. And, probably thanks to me (and everyone else), he now has a full-blown head cold. Yee-haw! Now to sift through the two station-wagon loads full of stuff and get down to 25 lbs apiece.
