It really is a big house, three stories tall. It has two large living rooms, one of which is set up as a meeting room with plenty of comfortable seating. There is a dining room that seats up to twenty people, and a large country kitchen. There are beds for sixteen to eighteen people. Four of the eight bedrooms are set up with two or three twin beds per room. Two bedrooms have one full size bed plus one or two twin size beds each; members of the LaPrelle family occupy the two remaining bedrooms.

A young John LaPrelle standing in front of the old iron-smelting furnace in 1955. The Big House is a large three-story farmhouse, located on a mountainside near Rural Retreat, Virginia. It has an interesting history. It was probably built in the early 1870's for the manager of White Rock Furnace, an iron-smelting furnace that operated on the property until the turn of the century. The "Iron Master" needed a large house to lodge out of town guests who came to the furnace on business.
