Bigrigg school - about 1914. The school was opened in 1868 and closed in 1968, it appears that it has been extended at least three times during its history, it has recently been transformed into a number of apartments but the exterior structure has not been altered. The railways of Bigrigg and Woodend. In the first part of the 19th Century big deposits of haematite (iron ore) were discovered in the Bigrigg, Woodend as well as Cleator and Egremont districts of West Cumberland, and by the 1840's they were being rapidly exploited. Railway lines were constructed by the Whitehaven, Cleator and Egremont Railway running from Whitehaven to Cleator, with branches to Woodend and Bigrigg to carry the ore.
