from stage to screen

From stage to screen. Monday, 22 June 2015. Further to previous blogs about preparation and playing spontaneously in the moment rather than rehearsing and planning, I was intrigued to come across a description, by Michael Mann, of shooting the famous coffee shop encounter between Robert De Niro and Al Pacino in Heat. It is a riveting scene and a masterclass in screen acting. What's extraordinary is how finely tuned they are to each other: probing and responding to tiny nuances of emotional intent. More t...

from stage to screen: February 2015

http://www.billbritten.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html

From stage to screen. Tuesday, 3 February 2015. I write in my book From Stage to Screen, and in another blog ( ‘stop thinking, start feeling’. About the emphasis in our education system on analytical skills and a kind of thinking that is unhelpful to actors. I were to suggest that going to school and gaining qualifications is a bad idea for an aspiring actor, I would be doing younger readers a huge disservice. Goal-setting, he argues, is very important in determining happiness later in life. But, he goes...

From stage to screen. Tuesday, 24 March 2015. WHAT'S IN A NAME? Creating the character is central to an actor’s preparation in any medium. As part of this it’s worth giving some thought to your character’s name. It won’t have been chosen randomly and will probably provide clues as to the writer’s intention. In life, we may not get to select our given name, but we do have some choice about how we use and adapt them. In my teens I made a choice to be Bill, rather than William. In From Stage to Screen.

http://www.billbritten.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html

From stage to screen. Monday, 4 May 2015. In the last few weeks I've been working with students at the Drama Centre on scenes from movies. In previous classes we have covered many of the technical requirements of acting on camera and most of the students have successfully internalised the imperative not to ‘perform’. But simply to ‘be’. But where many of them have fallen down is on their preparation. I also recently did some work with an ex-student who is preparing for the lead in a feature film. Despite...

from stage to screen: STARTING

http://www.billbritten.blogspot.com/2014/11/starting.html

From stage to screen. Saturday, 22 November 2014. We may act partly because we love the attention, but beginning is usually the high point of nerves and for some actors there is real fear in it. So it’s worth acknowledging the difficulty of starting. Despite how precious and luvvie. On stage usually only one person has to take the decision to begin and once the first line has been uttered, or the first action taken, the play is up and running and the path of least resistance is to keep going. And I assum...

from stage to screen: January 2015

http://www.billbritten.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html

From stage to screen. Thursday, 15 January 2015. PREPARING FOR A TAKE. I saw a preview screening of American Sniper yesterday and was struck by two things – one obvious, one less so. The first was just how much Bradley Cooper had beefed up for the part - hard to miss. The second was the challenges Sienna Miller must have faced when shooting many of her scenes. Her character, Taya, is repeatedly on the receiving end of distressing phone calls from her sniper husband, sometimes in the middle of battle.

Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Awesomeness. 2014 – My Giving Year. Its 2:30am on Jan 1, 2014 and I sit here with my 7&7 looking back on the interesting (and I use that term loosely) year 2013 turned out to be. I’m glad to close the books on 2013, it couldn’t have come soon enough. I’ve learned some really tough lessons and I have c...From → News. This i...
