Carlsbad Caverns National Park, New Mexico. Below: The surface is mostly desert scrub with cactus, a few flowers and a few rock formations . nothing to indicate the marvelous caverns below. Below: Our cavern tour took us 750 feet below the surface. The cavern rooms are huge and highly decorated with stalagmites and stalactites. Below: We were in awe at the beauty. Below: One of the intricate ceiling formations. Below: Some of the formations looked like curtains.

Great Sand Dunes National Park, Colorado. Below: When you're driving toward the park you see what appears to be a large pile of sand with some mountains behind it. Below: As you get closer you see that it really is a large pile of sand. Below: It turns out that the area is naturally sandy and the wind blows the sand toward the mountains. The sand can't blow over the mountains so it just whips up into a pile. The pile is now 750 feet tall. Below: There is a little creek that runs in front of the sand pile.

This is the impressive exterior of the tomb that houses Abraham Lincoln, his wife Mary and three of their children, Eddie, Willie and Tad. The interior is not as impressive. Badlands National Park, South Dakota. Below: The fossilized soils of the Badlands have been carved into many shapes over time. Below: The peaks and valleys of delicately banded colors hold one of the greatest collections of fossil mammals on Earth. Below: This herd of bighorn sheep was enjoying the prairie grasslands. Below: There were lots of Curlycup Gumweed and other wildflowers in bloom.

Wind Cave National Park, South Dakota. Below: A herd of 30 buffalo crossed the road right in front of us! Below: Wind Cave has over 142 miles of underground passageways. Our tour guide took us down 220 feet below the surface. Below: Some of the mineral deposits looked like icing on the walls. Below: There were intricate calcite boxwork formations on the ceilings. Below: Back on the surface, a prairie dog family was enjoying the sunny day.
