Huffman Code
http://www.binaryessence.com/dct/en000079.htm
The algorithm as described by David Huffman assigns every symbol to a leaf node of a binary code tree. These nodes are weighted by the number of occurences of the corresponding symbol called frequency or cost. The tree structure results from combining the nodes step-by-step until all of them are embedded in a root tree. The algorithm always combines the two nodes providing the lowest frequency in a bottom up procedure. The new interior nodes gets the sum of frequencies of both child nodes.

The following comparison table is based on the large version of the "Calgary Text Compression Corpus". In order to provide an identical initial position regarding the file attributes, a TAR file was compressed. It collects all files together and covers the additional header information. Arithmetic Coding (AC)
http://www.binaryessence.com/dct/en000118.htm
Principle of the AC. Data with high Redundancy. The aim of the arithmetic coding (AC) is to define a method that provides code words with an ideal length. Like for every other entropy coder, it is required to know the probability for the appearance of the individual symbols. The AC assigns an interval to each symbol, whose size reflects the probability for the appearance of this symbol. The code word of a symbol is an abritrary rational number belonging the corresponding interval.

RLE for Image Data. MS-Windows .bmp RLE8. MS-Windows .bmp RLE4. Traditionally RLE compression schemes are part of the following image data format:. BMP - Microsoft Bitmap. Bitmap images with a colour resolution of 4 and 8 bit can be compressed starting with BMP version 3 as defined since Microsoft Windows 3.x. Other colour resolutions are not supported and have to be stored uncompressed. MS-Windows .bmp RLE8. MS-Windows .bmp RLE4.

Deflate64(TM) (Enhanced Deflate)
http://www.binaryessence.com/dct/imp/en000225.htm
Deflate64 (Enhanced Deflate). Deflate64 is a slightly modified variant of the Deflate procedure. The fundamental mechanisms remained completely unchanged, only the following features were improved:. Expansion of the dictionary on 64 Kbytes. The addressable size of the sliding dictionary is extended from 32 kbytes to 64 kbytes. Expansion of the distance code. Expansion of the length codes. Besides PKWARE and a large number of commercial application some freeware and open source projects support Deflate6...

GIF - Graphic Interchange Format
http://www.binaryessence.com/dct/en000199.htm
GIF - Graphic Interchange Format. The development of the Graphic Interchange Format goes back into the 80's and thus into the time of electronic mailboxes. At that time different providers operated private and commercial mailbox systems, which simply communicated via telephone lines by acoustic couplers or modems. Characteristics of these connections were extremely small data transfer rates, compared with today's standards.
