As I see her getting more comfortable and starting to volunteer information, and as I start taking a shortcut path with her, I realize I am getting accustomed to Malawi. Or maybe the Malawi I know is getting accustomed to me. Of an infant democracy (about 35 years old).

John getting the crowd excited about hand-washing soap on the Sanitation Marketing Day. The Sanitation Marketing Day – what a day that was! Wow, what a shift from the traditional idea of just digging boreholes and handing out free water purification systems. It was a great idea, and it gave the group a specific focus. But when I as...

Life and work on an Engineers Without Borders placement in Malawi. Saturday, May 24, 2008. Where are the mud huts? When I set foot on the tarmac at the Lilongwe Airport in Malawi, I was fully braced for all sorts of shocks – culture shock, the shock of cold water bucket baths in the morning, and the shock of the smell of the Lake Malawi fish in the market. What I was not prepared for was the shock of adapting to an urban life in Malawi. Maize plot on a dirt road within the city of Blantyre. A dough-like ...

Life and work on an Engineers Without Borders placement in Malawi. Friday, September 5, 2008. Oh There They Are! So what is poverty? What is it that I have been trying to battle for the last few months? LWS: I think the more appropriate question for me is who is poverty? I have seen many different people who are struggling to overcome challenges that are preventing them from leading the life that they aspire to. To quote my friend Graham Lettner, “I see [poverty]. Wednesday, July 16, 2008. The Sustainable Good Life. 8220;If you have an expensive mortgage and a family to support then theoretical objections to the environmentally damaging commute to work or of the triviality of your job can quietly evaporate. Desperate people from all levels of wealth are hungry for better alternatives.”. How many people want more vacation time? How many people feel they lack material comforts compared to their neighbors? g {squared} glynnis in ghana: July 17th Blog Post
http://g-in-ghana.blogspot.com/2008/07/july-17th-blog-post.html
Monday, July 21, 2008. July 17th Blog Post. Well looking at the calendar today I realized to my surprise that I have only 31 days left here in Salaga. Almost exactly one month - though I think I will be much closer to that by the time I am able to post this! Next week I am heading out to the Makango area, part of our District, to spend some time in a village. I am planning on spending five days with a local family to experience the realities of rural life in Ghana - yes, mud hut and all! I am all ears!
Erica in Malawi: April 2008
http://ericagoesmalawi.blogspot.com/2008_04_01_archive.html
Sunday, April 13, 2008. We have recently received our placements for the summer. I will be working in a rural area just outside of Blantyre, Malawi on the Malawi Freshwater Project. My project involves working directly with a local field officer on monthly project planning, implementation, and reporting. I expect that there will be a knowledge and skills exchange through which we will learn from one another. Luckily, they build boreholes and my Geology class. I'm sure to study extra hard for that exam now.

Saturday, September 20, 2008. My First Few Days in Malawi. Written: May 14,2008. We are currently living in the “Family Lodge” right inside Blantyre. For 1000 Kwatcha a night it is pretty nice with comfy beds, etc.People are so happy when you can speak even a little Chichewa, and going out for the last couple days has made me realize how important it is going to be for me to speak even the basic Chichewa. I'd love to hear any questions, comments, or updates from Canada! Miss you all,. As an Engineers Wit...

Saturday, September 20, 2008. Another week of Malawi. Another friendly update. Written: May 24,2008. Moni (greetings in Chichewa),. I’ve spent only 2 weeks in Malawi and am already feeling comfortable in my surroundings. I’m slowly learning Chichewa, with many mistakes and laughter along the way, my stomach is getting used to the food and water, and I am feeling more and more comfortable with my host mother and my coworkers. I’ve been getting some requests for some Chichewa lessons, so here it goes:.

A reader with the attention span of a hummingbird. The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender: Proper Fangirling. 4:01 am 27 April 2014. How do you describe waking from a dream so delicate, spending the entirety of your day nostalgic, for tonight maybe the night you step into it once again. ONE COULD NEVER HAVE ENOUGH LAVENDER. This is how I looked when I was 2 pages in, half way in, and finished and regretting it. But the true beauty in this book, is how every line will leave you in awe, the tear...

binnu | Exploring pathways to a better world
Exploring pathways to a better world. February 22, 2011. Binnu, you are the enemy of progress. I gawked at my colleague for a second. There was a handful of us sitting at a restaurant just across the road from our office, enjoying some light soup for lunch. And Audit (we all call him audit because he is the audit officer a common convenient practice of calling people by their job titles, except for newcomers it makes it really hard to remember their real names! And we all had a good laugh. One man, Nico,...
