The concept of the project is based on a biological phenomenon commonly occurring in nature for microbial population regulation. Microorganisms secrete compounds that inhibit the growth of other microorganisms due to existing antagonism between microbial populations. This behaviour will be used for inhibiting the growth of the microorganisms responsible of MIC and biofouling. 1 Marine demonstrator in the Harlingen’ s port (Netherlands). 2 Marine demonstrators in the port of Gijòn (Spain). The main objectives of WP5 are as follows, the WP will be coordinated by STRESS S.c.a r.l.:. To create a dissemination plan with the aim of spreading the generated knowledge through web-site,. Publications and brochures;. Organization of workshops and participation/attendance to events to present the project;. To provide to publication of the obtained results in high quality journals;. To organize on site visits to the demonstration sites;. To create networking with other projects.

WP 1-Microorganisms and inhibitors to be included in the sol-gel matrix. In this work package will be studied the knowledge of the microorganisms that cause MIC and in the selection of antifouling microorganisms. The antifouling activity of the selected microorganisms as well as their inhibitory compounds will be studied. Finally, the scale-up of the fermentation process to produce enough quantities of the Anti-MIC microorganism or its antifouling compound will be realised.
