GIS

Because this project generates such large amounts of data, we must give thought to long term data storage and accessibility. Our strategy has been to store the data in a relational database, built around a graphical interface, or GIS. The GIS allows us to view, handle, and retrieve large amounts of data at all spatial scales. Data Management Protocols (pdf).
sampling
http://biodiversity.science.oregonstate.edu/sampling.html
In 10 quadrats on each transect, we measure the abundance of all macro plants and animals. Our 1999 census covered Oregon and Northern California sites. So far this year, we have sampled all sites but our most southern sites, for a total of almost 3000 quadrats! We plan to sample each transect once per year to document how diversity and abundance change over time and respond to such climatic changes like El Niño events. Tools of the Trade.

Overview of our methods - a nested design. At the largest scale, we have chosen major areas of rocky habitat across the West Coast of the U.S. In each of these major areas, we select 3 sites. These sites are typically spread across the major area to represent the range of variability within that area. For example in the Fort Bragg area of Northern California, our three sites are Todd Point, Point Cabrillo and Van Damme State Park. To see next level of resolution, click on the map.
