The Birder's Conundrum

Wednesday, March 25, 2015. Pie Chart: How Birders Spend Their Time. How do birders spend their time? It's pretty much different for everyone. But if we are generalizing, this pie chart should be a good breakdown of a birder's free time. Birding makes up a decent chunk of this time, but not all of it, as you will see below. We even manage a decent amount of normal human interaction - that's good news! We also took the liberty to further dissect the "birding" slice, below:. Is there anything we left off?

Sunday, August 31, 2014. Graph - Birdiness vs. Social Acceptability. Birders aren't known for being cool. This is partially due to the inherently obsessive nature of our hobby, but also because of the, um, obscure. Places we tend to visit. The Birder's Conundrum: Who We Are

http://www.birdersconundrum.blogspot.com/p/who-are-these-people.html

Sam and Lucas are birders (of course) based in Raleigh, North Carolina. Lucas is about to be a freshman studying Fisheries, Conservation, and Wildlife Biology at NC State University, and Sam is a senior at Broughton High School. Both got their start birding at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, where they volunteer. They enjoy the humor of birding but also want to share some tidbits of knowledge with anyone who is willing to read. Follow Sam on twitter @JollyBirding. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Saturday, November 15, 2014. EBird Makes County Listing (Even) Easier, Again. Every county lister knows eBird makes their lives easier. There is no way we'd be able to keep track of our totals for every single county we've visited so efficiently. Well, now the folks at eBird have outdone themselves again, with the freakishly-useful eBird Target. Seen, but now I can quickly and easily find out what birds I haven't. My November needs chart for Chatham after today. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Sunday, June 29, 2014. Where Sam is Going. Being a high school student means that the instant school is out for the summer I get bombarded with questions such as: What are you doing this summer? What are your plans for the break? Are you getting a job? Where are you going? What are you even going to do with yourself? To this I respond with an answer that leaves a feeling of disappointment hanging in the air around both the questioner and the questioned. I say this: Oh, I'm going to central New Jersey!

Birding With Bobay: January 2015

http://birdingwithbobay.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html

Friday, January 16, 2015. I don't really know what I was expecting the Quail-Dove chase to be like. I'm used to chasing rare ducks and shorebirds, where you basically just scope a field until you see the bird. This method usually doesn't take that long. It's pretty easy. This, however, is not. Golden Orb Trail, prime Quail-Dove habitat. Despite my mediocre and somewhat unsatisfying view of the bird, I left the park happy. Others had pored hours and hours into trying to see that bird. I was lucky.
