Birding Et Cetera

A chronicle of my birding and ornithological ventures across the globe. Saturday, March 16. NANPA Summit - Jacksonville, FL. Twelve of us, graduate and undergraduate students from across North America, eventually converged on Big Talbot Island, after a series of flight delays and cancellations. For the first part of the week, we would be staying in a house owned by the North Florida Land Trust, and spending all of Wednesday and Thursday shooting people and places on the island. Birding Et Cetera: August 2011

http://www.birdingetcetera.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html

A chronicle of my birding and ornithological ventures across the globe. Monday, August 1. Reflections on a Landscape. Flowers with outstretched lips and munching sublimely, but always watching with panoramic eyes; ptarmigan coolly (and rather stupidly) patrol the tundra nearby, with a slow gait and humorous clucking, and only seem alarmed when herding a new clutch of chicks. The plants are very different from those of the south as well. Labrador Teas with strong, fresh scents. Staring at the windswept tu...

A chronicle of my birding and ornithological ventures across the globe. Friday, August 20. Beginning an Odyssey in Ithaca. The community of birders around Ithaca and at the Lab of Ornithology is quite an awesome one. I'll be working at the Lab on Neotropical Birds. But, wait, there's more! The last time we went to Montezuma (Saturday the 11th), there was more to be seen, including. A sad, one-legged American Golden-plover. And more importantly, a very obliging Buff-breasted Sandpiper! And, least importan...

Tuesday, January 29, 2013. Yucatán Peninsula (Mexico), Belize and Guatemala (Part 4). After an incredible day birding the Caracol ruins deep in the Chiquibul Rainforest, we made our way back to the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve. Taking advantage of our high clearance vehicle, we drove down a horrible track to an area known as Big Rock Falls – an ideal place to set up camp for the night. Nomadic Birder: January 2012

http://nomadicbirder.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html

Saturday, January 7, 2012. Black-tailed Gull in Ohio. Back on November 16. Last year, while backpacking somewhere in Tanzania, I remember checking my phone and learning that a Black-tailed Gull was discovered in Ashtabula, Ohio – a first state record and 20. Species of gull for Ohio (if accepted). Being 8,000 miles away, I had to accept that fact that I’m just not going to get that bird. OK, not just ‘that bird’, but an ABA Code-4 vagrant from East Asia! BTGU resting (c) Chris West. What will be next?

http://nomadicbirder.blogspot.com/2013/01/yucatan-peninsula-mexico-belize.html

Monday, January 7, 2013. Yucatán Peninsula (Mexico), Belize and Guatemala (Part 3). Although it was great to be able to practice my fading Spanish in Mexico, it felt even better to be back in an English speaking country, which really makes logistics a whole lot easier. Unlike the rest of Central America, the official language of Belize, a former British colony, is English. Only 4% or so speak English at home though as the majority speak Spanish or Kriol. Along the way to Caracol. One of two King Vultures.

Nomadic Birder: Mexico is calling!

http://nomadicbirder.blogspot.com/2012/12/mexico-is-calling.html

Sunday, December 9, 2012. Several weeks ago it occurred to me that this has been the longest period of time in probably a decade that I haven’t traveled somewhere outside of the Great Lakes. Contrary to this year, in 2011 I found myself in a dozen countries…not just five states. This is blatantly unacceptable. Where have I not been yet? What can be done on a budget? We’ll land in Cancun and proceed doing a big loop starting off on Cozumel for island endemics. We’ll then head south spendin...And the Carac...

Nomadic Birder: December 2011

http://nomadicbirder.blogspot.com/2011_12_01_archive.html

Sunday, December 18, 2011. Tanzania – the heart of East Africa (Part 3). Emau Hill Forest Camp. The first three days were spent birding around camp and nearby trails; you don’t have to go very far to find great birds. On my first morning I woke to the loud calls of Silvery-cheeked Hornbills and Fischer’s Turacos – no need for an alarm clock! East Usambaras near Emau. It was hard to leave what I would consider my favorite region of Africa yet, but there was still more birding to be done. After returni...

Tuesday, February 14, 2012. Book Review: Birds of India (2nd Edition). Edition) covers all 1,375 species of residents, migrants and vagrants – and better yet, the range maps and text now mirrors the plates eliminating the hassle of relentlessly flipping through pages. It also includes taxonomical name changes as well as accurate, updated range maps. Plate 124: Jays and Magpies. Monday, February 6, 2012. Yesterday, Cleveland birders Paula Lozano and Bob Finkelstein joined me on a quick jaunt into the hear...
