Welcome to Birding Hawaii. The Hawaiian Islands are the most isolated archipelago in the world. Volcanic in origin, the individual islands vary in age from recently erupting to over 23 million years old. Due to the Hawaii’s isolation, very few life forms ever reached the islands, but those that did found ecological opportunities and created many new species through evolutionary processes. About 5 million years ago, a small flock of finches arrived from Asia. Today, sadly, only 18 of these species remain.
